  1. FRIDAY, FEB19. 2010 • Learning Goal – to recognize when entropy increases and decreases • Quick Review • Ch 11 Quiz • Entropy definition • Homework

  2. Yeah for Friday! • Pick up your specific heat labs • Take out your gold vocab / equation sheet • What would you like to review before the quiz?

  3. RECORD THESE DEFINITIONS ON YOUR LEARNING GOALS SHEET

  4. QUESTIONS OVER THE READING (Section 19.3) 1. List 4 ways in which entropy of a system increases 2. Is the entropy of these 2 reactions increasing or decreasing? 2H2(g) + O2(g)  2H2O(l) H2O(s)  H2O(g) • What does it mean if the ΔS of a reaction is positive? (Is entropy increasing or decreasing) 4. Is the following reaction spontaneous or not? 2Na + Cl2 2NaCl ΔG = -768.0 kJ

  5. IS A REACTION SPONTANEOUS OR NOT? ΔG is determined by ΔH and ΔS • Always Spontaneous: • ΔH = - (exothermic) and ΔS = + (increasing) • Never Spontaneous: • ΔH = + (endothermic) and ΔS = - (decreasing) • Sometimes sponaneous: • ΔH = - (exothermic) and ΔS = - (decreasing), spontaneous at low temps • ΔH = + (endothermic) and ΔS = + (increasing), spontaneous at high temps

  6. HOMEWORK: • Per 1-2: Hess’s Law Abstract – due Wed at 2:30pm • Page 1-2 of Entropy packet – due Mon • Read Sec 19.4: Entropy and Free Energy Calculations • Moodle lab quiz – Hess’s Law – closes Mon at 11pm • Thermo TEST – moved to Mon, March 1
