Mixed Number • What is a mixed number? • A “whole” number and a “fraction”

Mixed Number • First circle has 3 pieces shaded. Each piece is 1/3 of the circle • That is, 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 = 3/3 • Second circle has 2 pieces shaded. Each piece is 1/3 of the circle • That is, 1/3 + 1/3 = 2/3 • Total shaded then is 3/3 + 2/3 = 5/3
Mixed Number • Total shaded then is 3/3 + 2/3 = 5/3 • The fraction 5/3 can be written as 1 and 2/3 • Divide 3 into 5 goes 1 time • Remainder = 2 • Keep original denominator of 3 • Gives 1 and 2/ 3
