  3. Modern Languages • Global Citizenship Learning a foreign language provides pupils with new insights into and understanding of other people’s cultures and helps them to become global citizens. This should also help them in today’s increasingly global job market.

  4. Modern Languages • Thinking skills In Modern Languages pupils are encouraged to learn not what to think but rather how to think, which enables them to interpret, question, enquire and communicate clearly. Modern Languages helps to develop critical and imaginative thinking by encouraging independent autonomous thought.

  5. Modern Languages • Learning to learn In Modern Languages we do many things to help pupils learn to develop their own learning styles and give them tips on how best to tackle learning in general, which is a skill useful in all curricular areas and supports their development as responsible learners.

  6. Homework • The current S3 works from a Homework sheet which covers a variety of topics and cultural aspects of the country whose language they are studying. Pupils have said they enjoy working from these cards.

  7. Modern languages • Supports literacy In Modern Languages pupils develop their communication skills by researching and giving short presentations in the foreign language. This might take the form of a “show and tell” style presentation in which a pupil discusses what is on a photograph to a more complex presentation describing interesting facts about a French/German/Spanish speaking country. This helps to build confidence and supports pupils in becoming effective communicators.

  8. Modern Languages • Use of technologies Every classroom is equipped with an interactive whiteboard and a modern sound system. Pupils can use computers both at home and school to access informative, motivational websites, GLOW and IT packages specifically aimed at language learning.
