  1. TYPES OF SLEEP APNEA: OBSTRUCTIVE, CENTRAL, AND COMPLEX

  2. There Are 3 Types of Sleep Apnea. Here are the key differences between obstructive sleep apnea, central sleep apnea, and complex sleep apnea.

  3. OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA (OSA) OSA occurs when the muscles in the back of the throat fail to keep the airway open during sleep, causing breathing to stop or become shallow. This can lead to symptoms such as loud snoring, gasping or choking during sleep, and disrupted sleep. OSA is the most common type of sleep apnea

  4. CENTRAL SLEEP APNEA (CSA) • CSA occurs when the brain fails to send the proper signals to the muscles that control breathing. This can result in pauses in breathing during sleep, similar to OSA, but without the same physical obstruction of the airway. CSA is less common than OSA and is often associated with certain medical conditions such as heart failure, stroke, and neurological disorders.

  5. COMPLEX OR MIXED SLEEP APNEA Complex or mixed sleep apnea is a combination of both OSA and CSA. It occurs when a person with OSA also experiences episodes of central sleep apnea. In this case, treatment may involve addressing both the obstruction in the airway and the failure of the brain to send proper breathing signals.
