  3. Starting Points • Leadership is a way of living and thinking, not simply a set of skills or characteristics • Leadership Scholars enter Hendrix with extensive leadership experience • Leadership Scholars have a unique opportunity to learn and experience together over four years

  4. Fundamental Components • Action • Active learning processes that engage mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually • Interaction • Interaction with each other through formal an informal functions. Also, opportunities to interact with other leaders & scholars • Production • Active processes must include some tangible outcomes • Reflection • Individual opportunities to take experiences one step further through formal reflection

  6. THEFOUR-YEARSEQUENCE This sequence provides intentional progression of leadership development. It expects each class to become a learning community while encouraging interaction among all classes.

  7. Common Components • PERSONAL REFLECTION • Various forms and requirements per class. Options include personal writing and Educator postings • READING • FR, SO, and JR classes read a common text (per class) according to a timeline. “Theory-to-Practice” is achieved using Educator online forum. • PROPYLAEA • In order to be recognized as a “graduate” of the Leadership Scholars, each scholar must earn the Propylaea credit by graduation (2007 & 2008).

Freshman Year: Foundations • Fall Retreat: introduction & team building • All-Scholars Workshop (end of retreat) • Workshop series • Winter Retreat: Low- & High-Ropes • Book: Exploring Leadership (Komives, et al) Involvement with Campus Kitty (SO transition) • Year-End Commencement (all scholars), including class “year in review” presentation

  9. Sophomore Year: Organizing, Motivating, and Empowering • All-Scholars Workshop (end of FR Retreat) • Invitation to Lilly-sponsored Soph. Retreat • Scheduled meetings w/ JR Scholars • Exploration of group and event facilitation • Event Planning • Scholar “Monthly Montage” Series • Year-End Commencement • Spring Sophomore retreat • Campus Kitty event (JR transition) • The Leadership Challenge (Kouzes & Posner) • Student Leadership Practices Inventory (2nd semester) • Year-End Commencement (all scholars), including class presentation

Junior Year: Outreach & Service • All-Scholars Workshop (end of FR Retreat) • Scheduled workshops w/ SO Scholars • Plan & facilitate leadership workshops in pairs • Outreach-project planning • Winter Retreat with FR class (Winnamocka) • Implement community outreach projects • Higher Standard of Leadership (Nair) • Year-End Commencement (all scholars), including project presentations

Senior Year: YOUR Next Step • All-Scholars Workshop (end of FR Retreat) • Independent Project • Scheduled Meetings • Semester kick-off meetings (one each) • Weekly e-mail w/ Director • Meetings w/ Director as needed • “My Self as Leader” project • Year-end Commencement (all scholars), including individual presentations
