South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak has expressed a firm commitment to joining the US-led Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI) aimed at curbing the spread of weapons of mass destruction (WMD). However, he hesitates to pursue full membership due to concerns about provoking North Korea, particularly following their recent missile test on April 5, 2009. Lee emphasizes a stern response while keeping diplomatic avenues open. South Korea will intensify its inspections of vessels for signs of WMD following the recent tensions, reflecting an ongoing apprehension regarding North Korea's military capabilities.
