  1. This presentation will review the major Beam Instrumentation issues that could affect the restart and operation of the PSB, PS (SPS: following talk L Jensen) in 2006. The talk will cover system modifications, upgrades and areas where just getting the old hardware working after 18 months could be a challenge. The planning and some issues of FESA instruments in the CPS are mentioned as well. 1 List of Status & Changes instruments 2 Issues of new FESA instruments in CPS 3 Conclusion Michael Ludwig AB-BI-SW 10/01/2006 14:43 page 1 Status of CPS instrumentation for SU2006 CPS Instrumentation SU2006

  2. No changes for SU2006 (no problems expected): Linacs: LII: emittance, intensity, position (trajectory) LIII: semgrids, intensity PSB: trajectory injection, ejection, orbit (R1&2 PU 5,6 back), Q PSB intensity injection: (deploy during SU2006, 2nd week) ported to FESA#2, same as LEIR injection (ongoing) new hardware in parallel to old, define application clients needs (CO/OP) PSB intensity ring: (deploy during SU2006 , 2nd week) ported to FESA#2, no hardware changes application clients (working sets, samplers...), some impact (CO/OP) PSB intensity ejection: (deploy during SU2006 , 2nd week) ported to FESA#2, no hardware changes (2008 ?) App. Clients need first iteration (CO/OP) PSB ring profiles (fast wire scanners): (ongoing) repair broken scanners: new pieces are machined in the central workshop, expected end of Feb.2006. Then calibrate all, should be OK for SU2006. Michael Ludwig AB-BI-SW 10/01/2006 14:43 page 2 1 Status & Changes PSB instruments CPS Instrumentation SU2006

  3. No changes (no problems expected): PS intensity injection, ring, ejection PS trajectory injection, ejection, Q PS orbit (CODD): new PU pre-amplifiers, better sensitivity for ions (ongoing) harmonic number sequence update (AB-RF) (ongoing) special measurement instructions for 2nd injection batch some changes to SW needed for calibration, new sensitivity (ongoing) => some problems due to high system complexity expected, otherwise maintenance “as usual” normalizer orbit: not maintained new digital orbit: nothing available yet, development has priority TV screens: TT2, AD, LIII/LEIR: new FESA system, re-use LEIR application. Selection of console display with old application. (E Bravin) Michael Ludwig AB-BI-SW 10/01/2006 14:43 page 3 1 Status & Changes PS instruments CPS Instrumentation SU2006

  4. new calibration system, like for the PSB wire scanners (done) complete maintenance, new wires (done) 1 day instrument MD for mech. Oscillations (planned 30. Jan 2006) calibration errors i.e. H54 20m/s typical 0.25mm: Michael Ludwig AB-BI-SW 10/01/2006 14:43 page 4 1 Status & Changes PS ring profiles (fast wire scanners)

  5. Need to analyse mission critical legacy client interfaces together with OP and CO to implement backward compatibility for PSB intensities ”PSB FESA intensity D-day” 2nd week of PSB running with beam, need specialists available. First week PSB start-up with OLD instruments, nevertheless. Main concern is the backward compatibility to existing application clients. Complicated glue code is in the FEC communication, but all tools exist now. Structural issues: hope for “AB Controls Coordination Working Group” to start working, should be first issue to be tackled there. OP, CO and BI representatives reporting back to their groups. Deployment Coordination issues: keep involvement of OP on the level of the ABOC, some dedicated MDs. FESA framework issues: persistency, timing, developer API, are adressed by CO (see issue reporting tool JIRA). FESA must be stable for production software. 6. The time window in 2005 was used to solve many SW-FESA related issues and create the needed tools for the CPS. We did not succeed to deploy several instruments as planned because of backward compatibility issues and lacking structural support for GM application software. Three improvements: CODD sensitivity, Fast wire scanner calibrations, MTVs. All PSB intensity systems pass to FESA during SU2006. No FESA yet in the PS. PSB position systems in FESA during 2006 to finalize renovation of the PSB. Start also on the PS soon. The CPS instrumentation is OK for SU2006, but structural SW problems still reduce development and maintenance efficiency a lot.
