  1. What is TAMS? • TAMS is a unique opportunity for math and science oriented gifted students to expand and further their interests in a challenging environment surrounded by like-minded peers. • Students will live on the UNT campus and take college courses for two years.

  2. Academics • Required courses (for junior year): • Biology or Computer Science (plus lab) • Chemistry (plus Lab) • Math (Level to be determined) • English • Senior year • Physics (plus lab) • Math (Calculus 2, if not finished) • US History • Political Science (1 semester) • English – World Literature • Electives (beginning spring semesterof junior year)

  3. Electives • Whatever UNT course you are eligible to take (i.e. whatever prerequisites you have satisfied, if any) • Examples • Foreign language: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Russian, Spanish • Computer Science (if you aren’t in the CS track) • Microeconomics and Macroeconomics • Psychology • Microbiology • Organic Chemistry • etc.

  5. Where do people go after TAMS? • Class of 2014 • 26% UT Austin • 18% UT Dallas • 10% A&M • 11% Other Texas Schools • 35% Out-of-State • Includes Cornell, Stanford, Columbia, Yale, Cal Tech, MIT, UC Berkley, Duke, Harvard, etc.

  6. Research • Students encouraged to pursue undergraduate-level research • Opportunity to work in research labs with professors and graduate students. • Multiple successful competitions (Siemens, Goldwater, Science fair, etc.) • Paid summer research scholarships • Chance to earn scholarships

  8. Clubs • Student lead with administration backing • A few clubs at TAMS: • Ambassadors (Advocates of TAMS) • HOPE (Community Service) • TMS (Medical Society) • JETS (Science and Engineering Club) • RO (Research Organization) • Dull Roar (Music) • Sports Club.

Community Service • TAMS is very involved in the community and there are endless opportunities for selfless service and different interests. • Community services are easy and simple to become involved in. • Community aspect to almost all clubs • Most community service opportunities are available through the clubs

  10. Cost • State-Funded • Room and Board only cost • Financial Aid is available (FAFSA)

Spend-A-Day • Not sure about TAMS but still pretty interested? • Sign up and spend a day shadowing a TAMS student • You are able to: • Experience a day in the life of a TAMS student • Visit the dorms, buildings • Sit in real college classes with a TAMS student • Obtain a FIRST HAND experience of TAMS

  15. How high do my SAT scores need to be? • TAMS has a holistic admissions application process • Your SAT scores matter, but there is no firm “cutoff” that determines whether you are accepted or not

How much freedom do I have? • TAMS makes sure you are a responsible, mature high schooler before you come here ;) • You have a LOT of freedom • All TAMS students are also UNT students • Non-degree-seeking • You can do whatever a UNT student does (except join a fraternity/sorority) • Certain behavioral limits and restrictions in place • Nobody tells you when to do homework

  17. Will going to TAMS guarantee me going to an Ivy League? • TAMS was designed to accelerate students through the Texas university system. Students withdraw from high school and enter UNT early. • TAMS students generate official college transcripts by taking bona fide college courses, not simply college-equivalent, or college-level courses. The same teaching faculty who instruct UNT students also teach TAMS students. • Although TAMS graduates are regularly admitted to elite colleges, TAMS was not designed as an Ivy League conduit. • http://tams.unt.edu/admissions/tams-credits-transfer
