  4. About the Bayeux Tapestry • It shows the Norman conquest of England. • Origin unknown • One theory is that it was commissioned by Bishop of Bayeux, half brother of William the Conqueror, leader of the Norman invasion in 1066.

  5. Background Information • The years 449-1485 were ten centuries defined by war. • The Anglo Saxons invade Britain in the 5th Century and ends in civil wars of the 15th Century. • DO YOU KNOW HOW TO READ centuries? What years are included in the 5th Century? What years are included in the 15th Century? What century are we in right now?

  6. Evolution of English • English and England have the same root word: Engle. • Engle meaning the “Angles” referring to one of the three Germanic Tribes: Angles, Saxons, and Jutes. • These Germanic Tribes migrated to England in 449. • English means language of the Angles.

  7. Warm Up • What do you know about the Middle Ages? List three things….in sentence format

  8. Timeline p6-7 • What is the connection between British events of 449 and British literature from 892 to 991. • Write a 1-3 sentence response.

  12. Activity • Make a tri-fold“Welcome to Medieval Times” in Britain Brochure. Utilize pages 8-9. • Include information about: 1) Medieval Wealth 2) Peasants Life 3) Wergild 4) Doomsday Book 5) Black Death 6) Who owns the land? 7) Geography of the Land (Being There)
