  2. The Arts at Dartington Dartington International Summer School (DISS) DISS is part of the Arts at Dartington and is a key feature of our arts programme. There will be some changes on the Estate now that the College has relocated to Falmouth, but DISS will continue to take place at Dartington well into the future. This presentation is designed to inform you about the future accommodation solutions for DISS.

  3. 2011: Studio accommodation: • Some teaching rooms in Lower Close will no longer be available, however….. • We will have access to teaching spaces in Higher Close instead • Individual practice rooms will be provided (we are planning to retain the existing practice rooms) • If we find we are a bit short of teaching space, we have the option of timetabling the day slightly differently so that all courses can be accommodated • Hex and Gym remains available to Summer School Future accommodation: The Facts 2011: Sleeping accommodation: No change in terms of rooms available West wing of courtyard refurbished

  4. 2012: Studio accommodation: The number of teaching spaces available will not change from 2011 Future accommodation: The Facts 2012: Sleeping accommodation: Foxhole and Postern no longer available Therefore: We are planning to invest in a new accommodation solution at Barton Farm Site (Diagram 1 fig 1). Accommodation will be new, en-suite in single or twin rooms (Diagram 2). This investment will allow us to accommodate everyone who wants to stay on-site (nearer the Courtyard). The accommodation will be of a high standard but not a ‘new build’, i.e., not permanent. If Dartington can justify the future investment it may invest in permanent new accommodation, assuming Dartington can prove a year round demand. We will ensure the accommodation is affordable: it will cater for those who value a lower cost accommodation option. Higher Close – refurbished with additional rooms available. Camping – still available.

  6. Future accommodation: Questions Answered: Sleeping Accommodation Why is Foxhole no longer available from 2011 onwards? Foxhole is being redeveloped to create an experimental model for living in older age. The project is called Abundant Life. If you would like to know more please visit http://www.dartington.org/abundant-life (where you can sign up to be on their contact list).

  7. Future accommodation: Questions Answered: Sleeping Accommodation Why is the Postern no longer available from 2011 onwards? Schumacher College is moving from the Postern to Higher Close which will enable Schumacher College to expand the range of its work. Dartington Hall Trust is talking with an external organisation who would occupy The Postern (and its supporting accommodation) and who would will bring a new community to live and work on the estate.

  8. Future accommodation: Questions Answered: Sleeping Accommodation Why not just build more accommodation? Dartington is considering this option for the long-term. However, Dartington needs to be clear that there is a year round demand for any new-build accommodation before it invests what will be a considerable amount of money. Why not re-commission Aller Park? Aller Park is a listed building which does not comply with current legislation (particularly fire regulations) or building standards. Therefore re-commissioning Aller Park is a major financial consideration with an estimated £3m price tag to bring it back into use. However, the Property Department are exploring options for the building which may be beneficial to DISS, but we are not factoring this into our plans at this stage (because a final solution has not been arrived at).

  9. Future accommodation: Questions Answered: Sleeping Accommodation The Barton Farm Site looks a bit ropey, is it suitable? Dartington Hall Trust will invest in the site to make it entirely fit for purpose, including good access, lighting and services. Remember we have until Summer 2012 to develop the site, so there is plenty of time to achieve this. Are there any other plans for alternative accommodation? The campsite will remain for those who wish to camp during DISS. There may be improved camping facilities in the future, but these plans are not yet developed so we have not factored this into our plans at this stage.

  10. Future accommodation: Questions Answered: Sleeping Accommodation What happened to all the ‘pods’, ‘yurts’ and ‘huts’ that were proposed last year? The feedback from the Summer School community was very helpful. We learnt that the three most important considerations were: • cost to participants • access to wash-room/loo facilities • accommodation which was a) on estate & b) close as possible to the heart of the action (i.e., the Courtyard area) • Our current proposal has responded directly to this feedback.

  11. Future accommodation: Questions Answered: Studio Accommodation Why are some studios in Lower Close no longer available to the Summer School? The building on the left of the entrance to Lower Close will house small businesses as of January 2011. Many of these small businesses are currently located at Foxhole and will move to Lower Close because of the redevelopment of Foxhole. A new initiative called Dartington Space will incorporate the whole of Lower Close. The performance studios in the Lower Close complex (or Dartington Space as it will be known) will be run by the Arts at Dartington, therefore the spaces can easily be made available to DISS. We will have sufficient studio accommodation to run all the courses we want to, as well as providing individual practice space.

  12. Future accommodation: Questions Answered: Studio Accommodation What is Devon Academy of Performing Arts (DAPA)? DAPA is based in the Hex and Gym studios (Aller Park area). It is an initiative of KEVICC (our local community college) and will operate a year round programme of courses for young people in the performing arts. Because KEVICC will not use the buildings during holiday time DISS will still have access to all the spaces in the Hex and Gym as usual.

  13. Future accommodation: Questions Answered: Studio Accommodation Can you just remind me why all this is necessary? Dartington College of Arts has relocated to Falmouth and vacated the buildings they occupied. Dartington Hall Trust is reconfiguring the Estate to ensure there is a year round use for all the buildings and taking the opportunity to bring all of its charitable programmes (Arts, Sustainability and Social Justice) nearer the heart of the estate.
