Key Data……. • The main spoken language in Ecuador is Spanish. • its capital city is Quito, which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in the 1970s for having the best preserved and least altered historic center in Latin America. • There are 13.2 million people living in Ecuador. • In Ecuador, nine different climates can be identified: one dry, three tropical (wet, monsoon and savanna), three meso-thermic (wet, semi-wet and dry) and the "paramo" (alpine tundra). The ninth climate is that of the Galapagos Islands. According to the current currencyconversion rate of Ecuador, 25000 Sucre is equal to 1 US dollar.

  3. Flag….. • YELLOW: This color is a bit wider than the other two and it means the Sun and the Gold of our ancestors. It is also a symbol of generosity. • This color represents fertility and abundance of the Nation's crops and land. It also evokes the Federation of Greater Colombia, to which Ecuador belonged until 1830. • BLUE: It means the Sky and the Sea of this country. It is also said that this color represents Ecuador's independence from Spain and its conquerors. • RED: It means the Blood that our patriots and heroes gave for freedom. It represents the hardiness, bravery, strength and valor. The courage or the blood split by the soldiers and martyrs in the fight for Ecuador's independence from Spain.

The Condor: The big bird on top of theshieldstretches its wings to symbolize power, greatness and strength of Ecuador and standsready to strike out against any enemy. • The Snowcapped Mountain: This is Chimborazo Volcano rising against a blue sky. This is Ecuador's highest peak and the furthest point from the center of the Earth. It means the Height or Altitude of Ecuador. • The River: Is the Guayas river and means the beauty of its waters symbolizing the wealth of the individual regions. • The Ship: The ship on the river is named Guayas as well. It was built in 1841 in Guayaquil and was the first steamship in Ecuador and South America. This ship began service on October 9, 1841 and was built by Vicente Rocafuerte. It also means the commerce trade and navigation. • The Leaves: The laurel on the left represents the victories of this nation. The palm leaf on the right side is a symbol of the martyrs of the fight for independence and liberty. • The Sun: There's a white band across the sun and sky. It has the astrological signs of Aries, Taurus, Gemini and Cancer representing the months of March to July

Representative Figure • Luis Gallegos Chiriboga, the new Permanent Representative of Ecuador to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Gallegos Chiriboga had been serving as Ambassador of Ecuador to the United States since 2005. Before that, he was Ambassador of Ecuador to Australia and Permanent Representative of Ecuador to the United Nations in New York. From 2000 to 2002, he was Under Secretary for Political Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ecuador. From 1997 to 2000, he was Permanent Representative of Ecuador to the United Nations Office at Geneva. A career diplomat, Mr. Gallegos Chiriboga has also served as Ambassador of Ecuador to El Salvador (1994 to 1997); Coordinator of the Modernization of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1990 to 1994); and Head of Mission in Bulgaria (1985 to 1989). He has held numerous posts within the United Nations, including as President of the Global Initiative for Inclusive Information and Communications Technologies, President of the World Fund for International Rehabilitation, Chairperson of the Ad Hoc Committee on a Comprehensive and Integral International Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights and Dignity of Persons with Disabilities (2002 to 2005); Vice President of the General Assembly (2003); Vice President of the Economic and Social Council (2005); Vice President of the Executive Board of the United Nations Children’s Fund; Vice President of the Commission on Human Rights (1998); and President of the Geneva Diplomatic Corps Network. Mr. Gallegos Chiriboga has a Bachelor of Political and Social Sciences; a Doctor of Law; a Qualification in Diplomacy from the Institute of Higher National Studies; and a Master of Arts from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, United States. He was born on 13 December, 1946 and is married with two kids.
