Joint Clinical Academic Post:Principle Role Objectives • To develop an infrastructure and culture to support N &M research activity, utilisation and practice development • To contribute to defining the research areas of activity • To lead research activity in specific focussed areas • To support the quality standards integral to the research governance agenda

Joint Appointment: Guiding principles • Shared strategic focus • Thematic research activity • Clinical expertise and priorities should inform research agenda • Organisational infrastructure & support • Critical mass of individuals contributing to research agenda • Transparency • Sustainability

Where to begin in practice? …. • Scoping: current status • Meetings with individuals within NGD/GCU and nationally with remit for research and practice development • Perspectives on priorities and needs:national/local • Delivery of a strategy document &Implementation plan • Develop funding bids for nationally calls for proposals for research development in nursing, midwifery, AHCP • To collaboratively, create an infrastructure for research development

Research Activity Focus • Relevant to patient care and national priorities • Build on expertise and research themes within GCAL • Generation of ideas from current work that can be developed into new research questions/hypotheses • Improve quality, rigour and dissemination of research activity • Produce results that add to knowledge and understanding that develops clinical practice • Support staff to acquireskills to allow them to contribute to the research process and utilisation of evidence-based practice

Some approaches to generating ideas for research • What areas of practice is there uncertainty about its effect, manner of delivery or unclear evidence-base? • What could nurses/midwifes change in their practice that could lead to improvement in patient/carer outcomes? • What measures do we have that can be used as key indicators of effectiveness? • Can a core minimum dataset be identified for evaluation of patient health outcome across different areas of practice and clinical specialties? • What are patients’ perspectives of good care in different settings/clinical circumstances?

Performance targets • Increase in the quality and quantity of knowledge generation • Programmes of research with improved quality and quantity of research output • Increased income generation • Increase study opportunities for staff • Evidence of improvement in research utilisation in practice • Improved contribution of N &M to both generation and delivery of evidence based care

Achievements • Scoping of research activity undertaken by nurses and midwifes • Research Strategy agreed and disseminated • Establishment of N&M Research Implementation Group • Group represents a range of research and clinical expertise • Delivery of other professional and academic responsibilities

  13. Next steps ….. • Continue to implement agreed research strategy • Agree areas of research working • Monitor via agreed milestones • Responsive to opportunities of new developments e.g WoS; calls for research proposal • Support development of increased research capacity/career pathways
