  5. Disability Disability is any condition that creates barriers to a person’s function in society and daily life. It includes anyone with a physical, mental or sensory impairment which gives rise to physical, cultural or social barriers and limits their activities.   7. Physical Disabilities • Physical disability refers to any impairment that affects a person’s movement. From paralysis or loss of limbs to difficulty moving arts of the body. Physical disability can be caused by many different situations. • However this does not mean inability, and many persons with disabilities have overcome their disability and gone on to live a fulfilled life.   9. Polio • It is common, but in 99% of people it stays in the intestines. • The Poliovirus is found in unclean food and water. • In only 1% of cases the virus spreads to the spinal cord. Sensory disability • The five senses are hearing, sight, taste touch and smell. • These can be affected by different illnesses and serious accidents which can cause them to become dysfunctional. Visual Impairment • A Visual impairment is a loss of sight ranging from total blindness to narrow vision. • Some people are born with visual impairments, some are damaged by accidents, or by conditions such as cataracts and glaucoma • Both of these conditions are treatable if caught early and you visit your doctor. Glaucoma • This causes the person’s vision to look closed off from the edges as the picture shows. • It is described as ‘tunnel vision’. • It is difficult for the individual to notice this developing, but any changes in vision should be reported to a doctor as soon as possible. Causes of hearing Loss • At the workplace there are often constant loud noises, machinery or loud music. • High Levels of noise damage the internal aspects of the ear and accelerate early hearing loss. • Infection and blocked ears are often a leading cause of hearing loss, however these can be easily treatable and a simple procedure from the doctor can sometimes restore all hearing.   22. In the Northern Region, there are few services for persons with disabilities and most buildings, vehicles and even road crossings are off limits to persons with disabilities.   24. This is due to stigma - beliefs in society that make persons with disabilities feel shame, purposeless and receive unfair treatment.   26. Stigma • Is the prejudiced perceptions of any group of people. • It involves: • Assuming the actions they have done. • Guessing the type of person they are. Stigma • Many assume persons with disabilities are disabled through their own, fault, from a curse brought upon themselves, or the actions of a family member. • Many assume that persons with disabilities are a drain on society and cannot help themselves; we are trying to combat this perception. • What examples have you seen of stigma against disabilities in your life? Stigma • Persons with disabilities often compensate their loss of one sense by improving another. • The visually impaired often have an enhanced sense of hearing, becoming visionary musicians using acoustics to navigate. • The hearing impaired often have a enhanced sense of touch and can produce artisanal crafts. • Some of the most renowned intellectuals and scientists are physically disabled, mute or have other impairments.   29. Para-sports It is important to note that disability is not inability and there are a number of activities that persons with disabilities take part in. Para-sports are widely played throughout the world including Wheelchair basketball, goal ball, blind football, volleyball and swimming. The Paralympics is the biggest and most competitive sports competition for persons with disabilities in the world. The 2012 Paralympic games were watched by 1 billion people and saw Ghana enter its biggest team in the games so far. What can you do to help persons with disabilities? • Sensitise all children to disability. • Interact with children with disabilities. • Be observant of struggling children. • Allow children rest breaks if they are required.
