UNAM Mission statement • The University of Namibia strives to provide quality higher education through teaching, research, innovation and community services to our customers with the view to develop productive and competitive human resources capable of creating and driving public and private institutions towards a knowledge-based economy, economic growth and improved quality of life.

What is the purpose of engagement data integration? • To inform evidence-based planning, evaluation • To aid university relevance, social impact • Enrich student experience • To help universities forster community engagement and citizenship • To enable stakeholders have a role in the mission of universities

  5. Who are we engaging Categories of stakeholders Those who make policy Those who take decisions Those who benefit Those who are affected

  6. What value does it have • Informs strategies of engagement to students in volunteerism • Encourages academic staff in engagement through service learning (community-based projects) – e.g. indonesia UGM • Academic and social engagement through enquiry-based learning

How to measure engagement • Three different approaches Community, staff satisfaction rates and community awareness of university programmes Academic motivation expressed by students in community problem-solving initiatives Quantitative and qaulitative impacts of engagements on academic achievement, volunteerism and international/national experiences

  9. Funding – where will the $ come from? Public Sector National Commitment: 0.03% of GDP = N$300mil Grants – Research Professional Platform Horizon 2020 (EUR 6,6billion) Intra-Africa Novel ideas bring money!

Cautionary statements • Trust is an important issue in innovation landscape • Innovation – not always about technology products and business, processes, systems and most importantly about people • Research and innovation should be competencies prompted in early years at school, nurtured at university, and diffused into the public and private sector • Shift from R&D to Innovation Clusters (regional endowments
