  1. Trigger Upgrades Roadmap • We have had a two day trigger session: • During the first day we went over all the on-going activities going on in the various institutions which are involved in the Lvl-1 trigger upgrade. The general conclusions from this session are: • A number of groups is currently developing uTCA devices for triggering • Two architectures have emerged as good candidates for a future system. • We believe that at the moment we have the expertise, but not necessarily the manpower, to carry on a successful upgrade. • All these independent efforts need to be brought in a coherent program. • During the second day we heard ideas on how to proceed in then next few years and insure a successful trigger upgrade. The topics addressed where: • What will be the next Lvl-1 trigger architecture ? • How will the firmware be organised ? • What online software model do we want to follow ? • What have we learned from LHC ? • What is the necessary infrastructure ? • Do we have the manpower resources to proceed ? • Did not discuss financial resources which are bound to be considerable. CMS Upgrades Workshop FNAL – 28.10.08

  2. uTCA Demonstrators CMS Upgrades Workshop FNAL – 30.10.09

  3. Common Hardware Platform • All this progress is very good because it shows that CMS is adapting to new technologies and standards and several groups can produce themselves devices using advanced technologies. • However, we have also moved away from our stated goal to have standard hardware platforms. • We cannot afford to proceed again like LHC with n-different designs and n-different experts even if this is something easier to agree on. CMS Upgrades Workshop FNAL – 30.10.09

  4. A plan on how to upgrade the Lvl-1 Calorimeter-Trigger Incomplete CMS Upgrades Workshop FNAL – 28.10.09

  5. Remaining Questions: • How does Global Trigger (GT) comes this picture ? • GT must upgrade is inputs to receive the new GCT optical links. • Need also to enhance the GT algorithm capability utilizing larger FPGs. • Does this mean that the muon-trigger interfaces have to adapt to this ? • The CSC trigger will be upgraded • Progress was reported by the Florida and Rice groups. • In the future we will hear surely about their design and see how does it fit in the new trigger chain. CMS Upgrades Workshop FNAL – 30.10.09

  6. Designs for the next trigger - I This has profound implications in the Trigger Primitive Generator System CMS Upgrades Workshop FNAL – 18.11.08

  7. Designs for the next trigger - II CMS Upgrades Workshop FNAL – 30.10.09

  8. Criteria for Choosing one of them: • Potential for extending CMS physics capability. • Cost and reliability. • Which one is easier to maintain ? • This has to be resolved by April 2010 !! CMS Upgrades Workshop FNAL – 18.11.08

  9. Online Software: R. Frazier • No effort has been devoted to this so far. • There was a good review yesterday by R. Frazier who reviewed the advantages and disadvantages of the LHC online framework who recommended: CMS Upgrades Workshop FNAL – 30.11.09

  10. Online Software-II CMS Upgrades Workshop FNAL – 18.11.08

  11. Online Software-III Manpower is urgently needed here CMS Upgrades Workshop FNAL – 30.10.09

  12. Trigger Firmware • Firmware introduces a great degree of flexibility in trigger systems provided that: • The designers have foreseen future needs and designed the hardware with enough spare capability. • Have strict rules, procedures, validation tests and the necessary organization to design, test and carry out successful firmware upgrades. This is far from trivial. • More and more firmware introduces a large ‘software component’ in to trigger groups similar to the offline one. We need to adapt to this. CMS Upgrades Workshop FNAL – 30.10.09

  13. Firmware Organization: M. Schulte CMS Upgrades Workshop FNAL – 30.10.09

  14. Firmware: Concluding Recommendations CMS Upgrades Workshop FNAL – 30.10.09

  15. M. Hansen: Infrastructure CMS Upgrades Workshop FNAL – 30.10.09

  16. Summary • We got a first and very preliminary picture of the problem we have in our hands. • We have still to address question of resources both in terms of manpower and in terms of money. • Based on these I tried to put together a first chart which by no means you should take seriously: We got a first taste of how big is the problem we have in our hands: Effort to locate the FTEs which make this schedule realistic started during this meeting and will no doubt continue in the near future…Please fill in a .xls sheet provided during the meeting. It can be found on the agenda page. CMS Upgrades Workshop FNAL – 30.10.09
