Do you know the amount allocated to your Personal Budget and can you decide how to spend it? • (2017) 50% knew the amount allocated to their personal budget and 51% reported that they could decide how their personal budget was spent. • (2017) As a whole group 27% said they could not decide how to spend their personal budget – this rose to 43% for people with learning disabilities. • (2017) People aged 65yrs+ and people with memory and cognition support needs were significantly less likely to know the amount of money in their personal budget. • (2017) A common theme throughout the survey analysis was the disparity in results between people with different support needs, suggestion a lack of consistency in approach. In 2013 the figures are not broken down to this extent in the report so it is difficult to make a general judgement.
What seems to be working In 2017 (84%) and 2014 (82%) rated their support as good or very good in relation to dignity. In 2017 a large majority (81%) rated their support as good or very good in relation to quality. Some Useful Caveats? • Personalisation in any form is not a panacea for all. • Personalisation is most effective when targeted at individuals with specific conditions where self-management is possible. • The use of behavioural science is critical in delivering people-orientated system change; get the engagement with service users wrong, and it will fail.
