  1. Web Services Just another way to deliver products and services. Gordon Adams Systems Development Division

  2. Strategic Goal 13 – Data Access (1994) • The National Geodetic Survey will make its data holdings and products accessible to its customers. • These data products will be provided on media and in formats that are most effective and efficient. • NGS will provide direct access to the NGS Integrated Data Base using modern telecommunications capabilities. • NGS will work with states and other data collectors to maximize access to geodetic data. • NGS will also facilitate the development of networked, integrated, local geodetic databases.

  3. Data Access Evolution • Paper • Floppy disk • Bulletin board • CDROM • FTP Server • Web Site – browser accessible. • Web Service – no browser involved.

  4. Simple Web Services • Use of a fully parameterized URL from within an application or script. • UFCORS <-> Trimble Pathfinder Office • ds_data.prl <-> WinDesc • The web application was not designed with the external application in mind.

  5. Web Services • Structured interface. • Easily integrated into applications and other web pages. • Marketed to application developers, not the end user. • Examples • Real-Time GPS. • Web Map Service. • Potentially all current products and services.
