What is an Annotated Bibliography? • An Annotated Bibliography is an alphabetical listing of research sources accompanied by a narrative that describes the research source • The bibliography is a listing of the research sources which includes books, scholarly articles, magazines, websites, etc. • The annotation is a narrative description, evaluation, or summary of the research source • The purpose of the annotation is to provide information about the quality, authority, and relevance of the research source

In this study, two hundred and twelve students in psychology classes from community colleges in Southern Illinois were studied.   4. Writing the Annotation • The annotation is generally a paragraph in length, about 100 to 150 words. • It is written in the past tense • Quotes from the journal articles must properly cited • Use complete sentences • The citation and annotation are double spaced

What to cover in Annotated Bib #1 For the purpose of this annotated bibliography assignment, we are asking you to provide specific information about the research discussed in the peer reviewed journal articles you read. In writing the annotation you must answer the following questions: • What was the purpose of the study? • Who were the subjects studied? • What was the number of subjects in the study? • What transpired in the study? • What were the results (findings) and conclusions of the study? • How is this study relevant to your transition to SJSU?

  9. APA Format: General Rules Every line after the first line of the citation should be indented one-half inch from the left margin 5 to 7 spaces; this indentation is called a hanging indent.   10. Citing Authors in Periodicals • The author’s names are listed starting with the last name first (spelled out) followed by the initials of their first and middle names. Citing Authors in Periodicals • If an article has more than 7 authors, list the first six authors and then use 3 periods (…) after the 6th author’s name (the periods are also known as ellipses). Rules for citing in Periodicals • The title of article is listed in sentence-case format, where only the first letter of the first word of the title is capitalized, except proper nouns and the first letter of the word after a colon or dash. APA: Citing from Online Sources Same rules apply as those for printed journal articles, however the location of the article must be included in the citation • Two ways to identify location of online sources: • DOI – digital object identifier, a more permanent location • URL – Uniform Resource Locator, the general website location • If no DOI, use URL
