  4. History Today we are using the best form of stainless steel. In the past, it has come across various scientific stages of development. The timeline of the development of today’s stainless steel is as below: In the year 1797 chromium was discovered. Then in the year, 1800 chromium steel otherwise known as chromium iron alloy was invented. In later times it was observed that chromium steel had resistance against acid and corrosion. The stainless steel that we are using today was in the developmental stage between 1904-1922 i.e. 100 years ago from today. In the year 1913, Harry Brearley of the UK discovered the first stainless steel which was then called “Ruthless steel”. In the beginning, stainless steel had different names like “Allegheny metal”’ and “ Nirosta Steel”. The discovery of this metal alloy has revolutionized modern life and it has its application in several sectors, from manufacturing to industrial to transportation industries. In recent years, many marvelous constructions has also been made using stainless steel. In the first 100 years of development of stainless steel, around 100 grades of it have been manufactured. In the year 2010, the global production of stainless steel has reached the mark of 31 million Mt and the number is growing year by year. Now many countries are promoting the use of stainless steel as it is good for the environment and causes low carbon emission. These are also good for human health as the food and beverage stored and cooked in the stainless steel utensils remains safer compared to others. Since stainless steel is a very beneficial invention, it is going to be used highly in the future.

  5. TypesOfStainlessSteel One can divide stainless steel into many categories, but mainly we can categorize them into three categories. These are as follows: Austenitic: These stainless steel has lots of chromium content in them. They also have a strong resistance against corrosion. Nonmagnetic is one of their properties but they can be magnetic with the help of the cold forming process. These are the most common types of stainless steel alloys as they are two-thirds of the whole stainless steel production. Ferritic: These are the second most common type of stainless steel alloys. They have less nickel content and no carbon content. They are less expensive and the items made from these materials can be hardened using cold rolling. They have low thermal expansion and high thermal conductivity. These are famous for their ductility and formability properties. Martensitic: These are the least common type of stainless steel. They are hardened using the heat and aging treatment. Due to their high hardness property, these are mainly used where high tensile strength is needed. To improve the corrosion resistance of these materials, the polymer coating is made on them.
