  1. NENE: New Educational Networking ExchangesThe baby's first steps...(CAN-USA-MEX-CHILE) Spring Internet2 Member Meeting International Collaborations March 7, 20001 Ana Preston

  2. Very basic Spanish New Educational Networking Exchanges nene: babyel nene: the baby

  3. How “el NENE” was conceived… • Fall CUDI Meeting (Nov. 2001 - Monterrey, Nuevo Leon) • The “parents”: Canada/CANARIE: Peter MarshallMexico/CUDI: Jose Antonio Ramirez Vidal, Arturo Servin, Ivan MartinezU.S./Internet2: Ana Preston, Heather BoylesChile/REUNA: Cristian Henry (in spirit) • Connectivity in place, what can we do? • Start “small” (simple and feasible), but make it grow and evolve into something bigger and more mature.

  4. What is NENE about.. • Informative exchanges between all participants: Canada, Chile, Mexico and the U.S. • Use Internet2 as the vehicle and H.323-based videoconferencing as the enabling technology • Explore issues regarding videoconferencing over high-speed networks • Explore and learn from these interactions. • A framework upon which all the participants can build a foundation for "educational and research" collaborations.

  5. How does “el NENE” look like? • Exchanges: a one-hour multipoint videoconference. • The country "hosting" the seminar presents for about 20-30 minutes and/or sets the agenda. • The rest of the hour is devoted for questions/answers and general discussion. • The country "hosting" the seminar is also the moderator for the call. • Enhanced participation by CUDI members: CICESE, IPN, ITESM, UAT, UANL, UDG, UDLAP, UNAM and other affiliate members. • Technical coordination/infrastructure: UAT (Ivan Martinez)

  6. NENE’s so far... Topics/Themes:  Generally, introductory H.323 deployment and how it is being used in each country/universities. Ist. NENE: Mexico -- Agenda 01/22/01 • Red CUDI (ITESM) • H.323 Infrastructure Update (UAT) • Migration Schema H.320 to H.323 (UDG) • Applications (IPN) • Experiences and perspectives (UT - US)

  7. And another one.. 2nd. NENE: U.S. -- Agenda 02/19/01 • 11:00: Welcome (Ana Preston, University of Tennessee) • 11:05: Overview of US infrastructure and Internet2 (Heather Boyles, Internet2) • 11:15: ViDe and ViDeNet overviews (Tyler Johnson, UNC) • 11:30: Case Study I - University of North Carolina (Tyler Johnson) • 11:40: Case Study II - University of Tennessee (Ana Preston and invited faculty: “why we needed this yesterday…” • 11:50: Questions and Answers • 12:00: Closing Remarks

  8. What we have learned • Really good things (good NENE): • “Bad” things (bad NENE) • How can this baby grow….Basics: • Language • Time zones: GMT vs. 11:00 am EST; 10:00 am CST; 8:00 am PST; Chile is +2 hours EST (i.e., two h • Testing and actual exchange coordination • Getting to know one another

  11. The baby’s first steps... Best Practices: • Language • Moderating and continuity • Slides/presentation materials: design guidelines • turn that MUTE button ON!! audio echos, backround noise, not muting Technical challenges • can it be the network?  • almost perfect on 01/25/01; • networks behaved beautifully

  12. The baby’s first steps... Technical challenges (cont.) • can it be the network? BUT on 2/19/01:  • Canada reports: choppy video, audio breakups, 40-50% congestion; at least 6 reconnects • Chile: couldn’t see presentations, couldn’t be heard, bad quality overall; already on transoceanic cable • Possible reason: trying new features on MCU (Accord); No transcoding, Video Switching (assumes speed constants -- 384kps) And more: • Video: who I am talking to? Presentations; testing of features: transcoding, continuous presence

  13. The baby’s first steps... • Equipment: heterogenous clients: low quality (NetMeeting) up to Codec’s (Tandberg) and Vcon, Polycon clients- not all clients have same capabilites, e.g., echo cancelation, selectable streaming (bandwidth). • Coordination: technically/logistics • Biggest participant: CUDI’s universities; why this was a very good incentive • So “el Nene” started...

  14. From walking to running... Potential: • Remote and Distance learning • Real test-bed for collaborations between our countries • A tangible framework for interactions.

  15. From walking to running... Next steps: • Minimum requirements for better quality • Continue monthly exchanges • Augment best practices • Get faculty and student participation • Explore T.120 capabilities and such on international multipoint calls • Mexico/Chile: inclusion in VideNet and coordination of directories, gatekeeper and dialing schemas • Solicit more participation • Explore theme-specific exchanges • And all those to be discovered...

  16. Thanks! Gracias! Merci! - Ivan Martinez (UAT), Carlos Portes (UAT), CUDI (Jose Antonio Ramirez, Francisco Zaldivar), and all participating Mexican universities - Cristian Henry (Chile/REUNA), his staff and their patience… - Peter Marshall, Marc Boulerice (CANARIE) (for being there -- we know it’s COLD in Canada!!) - Tyler Johnson (UNC), Heather Boyles (UCAID) nene.internet2.uat.mx Ana Preston University of Tennessee apreston@utk.edu
