  4. Subject - Social Studies, Language Arts, Computers Grade Level - 5th grade TEKS Objective: TEKS: §113.7. Social Studies, Grade 5. (b)(2)(C) Summarize the results of the American Revolution, including the establishment of the United States and the origins of U.S. military institutions

Goal: Develop student’s knowledge and understanding of the American Revolutionary War as well as create opportunities for students to efficiently utilize technology. • Objectives:Students will explore the American Revolutionary War by choosing main ideas from various sources (text book, Internet, etc) and demonstrate their knowledge of the war through creating a PowerPoint slide show.

  6. MaterialsNeeded • Microsoft PowerPoint • Reference materials for the Revolutionary War • An overhead projector • Computer • Screen to project the slide shows • A scanner is optional.

  7. Technology Requirements:This lesson plan integrates technology into the learning environment by utilizing computers with PowerPoint programs, an overhead projector, and a scanner to execute the student’s PowerPoint presentations. Prior Knowledge (Prerequisite):Before this unit can be assessed, students need to have researched their material, chosen their information for their slide show, and know how to use the PowerPoint program.

  8. Accommodation Strategies:Simplify instructions for individual students who may not understand the instructions. Create step-by-step directions on creating PowerPoint Presentation for students to utilize. Students with disabilities will be assisted by their peers or teacher helping them scan or upload their pictures and ideas into the PowerPoint program so that they can contribute to class activities. Provide remote controls for students to use so that they can present their information at their own pace rather than on a timed slide.

Suggestions for Special Education Learners: -Students will label events that led to the American Revolution from illustrations. -Students will identify events that led to the American Revolution depicted in illustrations and phrases. -Students will compare/contrast events leading to the American Revolution using graphic organizers (i.e. Venn diagrams). -Students will interpret the effects of an event that led to the American Revolution on the people's lives using their social studies texts, trade books or the Internet. -Students will look for vocabulary that explores events leading to the American Revolution.

Helpful Hints for your PowerPoint Getting Started Hints: • Before you make a PowerPoint slide show, decide: • The Title of Your Slide Show • What pictures and text will be placed on each slide • How many slides you will make • If you want a digital photograph of yourself (your teacher • will provide a camera) Make a storyboard. A storyboard is a visual layout of the pictures and text you want on each slide. Use these templates to tell your story. PowerPoint allows you to choose a layout. When you are in the PowerPoint program, you will see this screen.

Instructions for making list in PowerPoint • Go to the toolbar and click the New Slide button. • Select the Bulleted List layout in the New Slide window and click OK. • Go to the title placeholder in the slide and click once in the Click to Add Title section. • Type the title of the bulleted list. • Click once in the Click to Add Text Box section and begin typing the bulleted list information. • Press Return or Enter after each list item. • Save this slide by going to the File menu and selecting Save.

  16. LessonProcess Review videos from Anticipatory Set Discuss project, including rubric requirements. Students research information from the Revolutionary War. Mini-lessons on how to choose important information and noting sources used are taught before work on the slide show is begun.

  17. (continued) After students have sketched out their plan for their slide show, begin constructing the show using PowerPoint (This will take about (4) 45-minute class periods). If students know how to use a scanner, allow them to scan relevant pictures or ask you to scan them and put them in a network folder. Students present their slide show to the class (computer grade is assessed at that time.) Students will save their work to their network file and to a disk, and give to the teacher for rubric assessment.

  18. Assessment:Create a rubric based upon what you are assessing. For instance, students receive two separate grades: One for the chosen material for the slide show & one for appropriate use of PowerPoint.
