  2. First Stumbling Block • Joshua Chapter 9 • Gibeon’s Deception- vv.3-13 • Israel did Not Consult God- vv.14,15 • Had to Honor Their Agreement- vv.19-21

  3. Failed After Joshua Died • Judges 1:21 “did not drive out” • Judges 1:27-36 “did not completely drive them out” • Israel seemed content to enslave the Canaanites!

  4. WHY Were they Content? • Compassion – “Poor people, they are so misguided and helpless.” • Convenience – “It would be a lot easier for us if we just moved in and learned to ‘get along’ with these people.” • Opportunity to gain a resource- “IF we leave them alive, we can use them as SLAVES!”

  5. Consequences • A snare & Temptation- Judges 2:1-4 • Next generation forsook the Lord – Judges 2:10-12 • Idolatry continued, in the greater part, until the exile many hundreds of years later!
