  1. VIRtual LABoratories for Education and Engineering Applications (VIRLAB) Dr. Ali Osman KURT Sakarya University Metallurgy and Materials Engineering Department Workshop on Nanotech - TUBİTAK MAM - 03/10/2003

  2. Aim • Introducing a new and potential FP6 project • Building new partnerships Workshop on Nanotech - TUBİTAK MAM - 03/10/2003

  3. First Step • We miniaturised our idea in such a way to reflect our VIRLAB project. • To do this, a small project proposal was prepared and given to the University`Board of Scientific Research Commission for their financial support. Workshop on Nanotech - TUBİTAK MAM - 03/10/2003

  4. Title: Project Uni - The study of building Virtual Mechanic Metallurgy Laboratory: A model for VIRLAB. FP6 - Virtual Laboratories for Education and Engineering Applications (VIRLAB) Workshop on Nanotech - TUBİTAK MAM - 03/10/2003

  5. Uni - Aims of the Uni`Project Some of the expected outcome of the proposed project is - to determine and predict the materials mechanical performance at virtual environment, to overcome the limitations in real laboratory testing conditions, to give flexibility of testing any parameter that may not be visible in real life conditions (such as factors of heat and speed). Workshop on Nanotech - TUBİTAK MAM - 03/10/2003

  6. FP6 - Aims of VIRLAB The ultimate aim is to build “An Ultimate Virtual Laboratory” which serves like as a real laboratory with the advantage of having all the possible projected benefits. Benefits: • Quick and effective decision making, • Easy design of new materials, products -prototypes, and testing of the models, • Easy to handle an educational tool for Universities and for staff training, • and so on... Workshop on Nanotech - TUBİTAK MAM - 03/10/2003

  7. Project Content First to concentrate on more widely used areas, such as areas where either running costs are high. Or there is a risk of human health. Challenge: Instead of building many specific laboratories, a model structure will be constructed. Workshop on Nanotech - TUBİTAK MAM - 03/10/2003

  8. Duration Depends on how and with which to use. NoE, IP, STREP, ? Workshop on Nanotech - TUBİTAK MAM - 03/10/2003

  9. Activity Areas • NMP-2002-3.4.1.1 : Long-term interdisciplinary research into understanding phenomena, mastering processes and developing research tools • NMP-2002-3.4.1.1-1 : Expanding knowledge in size-dependent phenomena • NMP-2002-3.4.2.1 Development of fundamental knowledge Workshop on Nanotech - TUBİTAK MAM - 03/10/2003

  10. Literature Education Works like those of the course work materials in schools can be found quite common in literature. They are mainly based on the animation effects with little or no simulation. (Absence of any artificial intelligence.) Example: Model ChemLab from Model Science is running quite well for primary and secondary school chemistry labs. Workshop on Nanotech - TUBİTAK MAM - 03/10/2003

  11. Literature - continue Industry There are a quite number of computer simulations found on metal casting applications. Most of the systems predict solidification parameters. However, they have been used exclusively for metallurgical applications. Not suitable for educational purposes. Workshop on Nanotech - TUBİTAK MAM - 03/10/2003

  12. To be Considered A real laboratory testing (endless data collection, analysis and transfer to the computer world where they are going to be processed using supercomputers for the modelling, simulation and creation of VIRLAB. (Artificial Intelligence, Mathematical Models for Simulations, ...) Workshop on Nanotech - TUBİTAK MAM - 03/10/2003

  13. Project Team Sakarya University • Engineering Faculty • Dept of Industrial Engineering (I*PROMS - NoE) • Dept of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering • IT Dept Workshop on Nanotech - TUBİTAK MAM - 03/10/2003

  14. Collaboration We would be very pleased to get in touch with those parties of similar interest. Workshop on Nanotech - TUBİTAK MAM - 03/10/2003
