  1. Small Modular Reactors Scott O’Connor – Engineer Group Lead Desirée Wolfgramm – Senior Engineer Energy Northwest Jan. 31, 2013

  2. Energy Northwest A not-for-profit Municipal Corporation

  3. Energy Northwest Projects Packwood Lake Hydro-electric Project (27 MWe) Columbia Generating Station (1,170 MWe) Nine Canyon Wind Project (96 MWe) White Bluffs Solar Station (38 KWe)

  4. Nuclear Energy • Valuable regional and national resource • Safe, reliable and cost effective • Attributes well demonstrated in U.S. • Global revival includes SMRs

  5. Small Modular Reactors • Modular in design – manufactured in factory; delivered and installed at the site • Small size enables many applications

  6. SMR – Northwest Utility Support • PNW Utility SMR Working Group formed in 2009 by Energy Northwest and Northwest utilities

  7. SMR – Government Support • Jan ‘12 – DOE encourages SMR technology • March ‘12 –$450 million in government cost-share funding for up to two SMRs • April ‘12 – EN sends letter to DOE, on behalf of nuclear working group, supporting SMR • Nov ‘12 – DOE partnership with B&W and TVA announced

  8. SMR – Modular Technology • Scalable • NuScale design: up to 12 modules generating 540 Mwe • Technology developed/tested by OSU, INL and Nexant-Bechtel under DOE funded research

  9. Passively Safe Reactor Modules Reactors housed inside high strength steel containment vessels; submerged in 4 mil gals of water below ground level inside the Reactor Building. The Reactor Building is designed to withstand earthquakes, floods, tornados, hurricane force winds and aircraft impacts. 12-module, 540 MWe NuScale Plant 3

  10. SMR – Path Forward • Study group monitoring SMR technology • Carbonless Energy Park

  12. Nuclear Energy as Part of a Mix A majority of Washington residents think that we need a mix of energy sources, including nuclear energy. Need a mix of both renewable and more traditional power sources, including nuclear Renewables alone Don’t know

  13. 65% Support a New Nuclear Plant

  14. Voters Favor Adding Nuclear Energy Nuclear is prioritized by statewide respondents second, just short of hydro in terms of overall effectiveness of meeting future statewide energy demands.
