  1. Percent Equations and Proportions

  2. When using a percent equation or percent proportion, the answer will always be the exact same. So, either may be used.

  3. Percent Equation part = % * base • The word “is” will identify the part. • The word “percent” or the symbol % will identify the % • The word “of” will identify the base.

  4. Percent Equationpart = % * base What is 28% of 138? The word “is” identifies the part. Since it says “What is” we are looking for the part. Place a variable in the “part”, change the % to a decimal, place 138 in the base, and solve! x = .28 * 138 x = 38.64

  5. Percent Proportion • The word “is” will identify the part. • The word “percent” or the symbol % will identify the % • The word “of” will identify the base.

  6. Percent Proportion What is 28% of 138? The word “is” identifies the part. Since it says “What is” we are looking for the part. Place a variable in the “part”, plug in 28 into % and 138 into base! Now solve the proportion. (Continue to next slide)

  7. Cross multiply 100x = 3864 Divide by 100 x = 38.64 x = 38.64

  8. What is 25% of 30? part = % * base x = .25 * 30 750 = 100x x = 7.5 7.5 = x (divide by 100) We know the percent is 25 because of the symbol next to it. The word ofgave us the clue that 30 is the base.

  9. 8 is what percent of 20? part = % * base 8 = 20x (divide by 20) 800 = 20x x = .4 (move decimal to left 2 times) 40 = x (divide by 20) The word is let’s us know that 8 is the part. It says “what percent”, so we know we are looking for the percent. The word of tells us that 20 is the base.

  10. 8 is what percent of 20? part = % * base 8 = 20x (divide by 20) 800 = 20x (divide by 20) x = .4 (move decimal to left 2 times) 40% = x x = 40% The word is let’s us know that 8 is the part. It says “what percent”, so we know we are looking for the percent. The word of tells us that 20 is the base.

  11. 10 is 25% of what number? part = % * base 10 = .25x (divide by .25) 25n = 1000 (divide by 25) x = 40 40 = x The word is indicates that 10 is the part. The % sign identifies the percent. The question says, “of what number”, so we are looking for the base.
