  4. 2) What is Humanism? • Humanism is: • A worldview that developed from the Renaissance period that focused on the individual rather than divine matters. • It centres on the values, potential and needs of humans. • Humanism encouraged: • Shaping your own life by using your talents • Experimenting and questioning • Living a rich life • Becoming educated

  5. 2) What is Humanism? • How did humanist ideas spread? • Scholars: • Studied writings of Greek and Roman Civilizations • Looked at the ideas from Islamic and Jewish Scholars • Invitations to the courts of Monarchs and Nobles • Spread the ideas to their people • Students head to universities • Spread their ideas when they go home • Petrarch, Erasmus, Nicolo Machiavelli, Johannes Gutenberg

  6. 2) What is Humanism? • How did humanist ideas spread? • Artists: • Developed new styles and techniques • Studied Greek, Roman, Islamic works for inspiration • Merchants and the wealthy paid artists to make portraits and sculptures for the city and themselves • Michelangelo, Botticelli, da Vinci
