  2. CANDIDATE STATEMENT Through my journey of art I have focused on biology. Considering that biology is a study that is so broad, my art has only focused on the plant and animal kingdoms. I can recall when I first researched images on biology and its relation to art, there were only three to four relevant images. Thus, I wanted to exemplify the message that science can also be art via my art pieces, but I knew it would be a challenge. Some weaknesses that I saw in my art pieces related to the subject matter itself. Considering that biology is a solid topic, I didn’t know how to depict parts of the body in an artistic way, which made it seem more like a medical illustration instead of art. Also, at times I felt I did not have solid and accurate transitions from one art piece to another, making my circle of art unorganized. On the contrary, a strength I saw in my work was being able to have strong cultural connections. With this, I managed to have a symbolic connection in my art, allowing me to ultimately have theory of knowledge connections. Also, in order to overcome my weaknesses, my exploration with different media, such as encaustic media, allowed me to preserve the artistic aspects of some pieces, although my main media was acrylic paint on canvas. In regards to the artists I researched, majority of my artist connections are to artists who are not well renowned. Such artists include Casey Reas, Steven Montgomery, Bonnie MacLean, and Joan Berg Victor. Other artists that I researched include Jasper Johns, Jackson Pollock and Banksy. With the specific techniques of these artists and the help of many cultural connections, I believe I have accomplished my goal of showing that science can also be art.
