  1. Describe one decision made by the Allies about the war against Germany at the Teheran Conference. (2 marks) One decision made by the Allies about the war against Germany was that Britain and the USA would open up a second front by invading France in 1944. (2/2 marks) Briefly explain the main decisions made about Germany at the Yalta Conference in February 1945. (6 marks) One of the main decisions made about Germany at the Yalta Conference was that Germany would be divided into 4 zones once it had been defeated. Each of the four zones would be controlled by either the US, Britain, France and the USSR. France was only included after Churchill pushed for this to happen. A second decision made about Germany at Yalta was to divide Berlin in the same way. This was because Berlin, the capital city, would fall deep inside the Soviet zone of Germany. This would give the USSR an unfair advantage. A third decision made about Germany at Yalta was to hunt down and try Nazi war criminals in an international court of justice, which would be set up at Nuremberg. (6/6 marks) Briefly explain what the Allies decided about Germany at the Potsdam Conference (1945). (6 marks) One decision made about Germany at the Potsdam Conference was to demilitarise Germany. This would leave Germany without an army, in order to prevent future invasions or wars. This would keep the peace across Europe. A second decision was to re-establish democracy in Germany. This would allow people to participate in free elections again and decide on their government after the collapse of the Nazi dictatorship. This would restore freedom of speech and freedom of the press to Germany. A third decision was to make Germany pay reparations in materials and equipment. Most of this would go to the USSR to compensate them for the fact that 20 million Russians had died in the war. It was agreed that the USSR could take whatever industrial machinery they wanted from their zone of Germany. They would also receive 25% of industrial goods made in the Western zones of Germany. (6/6 marks)
