  1. What is Boys Hope Girls Hope?

  2. Boys Hope Girls Hope is a national non-profit organization that helps academically capable and motivated children in need meet their full potential and become men and women for others by providing value-centered, family-like homes, opportunities and education through college.

  3. Founded in 1977 by St. Louis Jesuit Fr. Paul Sheridan, SJ., Boys Hope Girls Hope was created to counter The many issues threatening children today, such as: Overcrowded and underfunded schools Families distressed by poverty, illness, divorce, and death Neighborhoods shattered by drugs and violence

  4. Since 1991, 100 % of Boys Hope Girls Hope Scholars have graduated and gone on to attend college. Our college retention rate is at 89 to 94%, compared to the national average of 69%.

Since 1977, Boys Hope Girls Hope has expanded to 15 US cities as well as in Latin America and Mexico: Baltimore, MD Baton Rouge, LA Chicago, IL Cincinnati, OH Denver, CO Detroit, MI Kansas City, MO New Orleans, LA New York, NY Northeastern Ohio Phoenix, AZ Pittsburgh, PA San Francisco, CA Southern California St. Louis, MO Sao Paulo, Brazil Guatamala City, Guatamala Lima, Peru Monterrey, Mexico

  6. The Detroit branch of Boys Hope Girls Hope was established more than 25 years ago. We are part of a national and international network dedicated to helping children of all ethnic and religious background achieve their dreams.

  8. Boys Hope Girls Hope Detroit empowers children with: • arms-around care for scholars • safe homes and environments • a first-class education • opportunities to learn more about themselves and the world • academic, financial, and spiritual support through college

  10. Boys Hope Girls Hope Detroit operates two main programs: Residential Scholar Program Hope Prep Community Scholars Program

  11. Boys Hope Girls Hope provides children with long term care in non-institutional homes staffed by live-in residential counselors who challenge scholars to live up to their potential while developing a strong moral and spiritual foundation. Residential Scholar Program

  12. Residential Scholars receive: • Full academic scholarships to first-rate middle schools and high schools • Mentoring, tutoring and professional counseling • Health care services, as needed • Enrichment opportunities • Financial and emotional support through college

  13. Hope Prep Community Scholars Designed for children from stable, supportive homes where learning is valued but families do not have the means to provide superior educational opportunities

  14. Hope Prep Scholars receive: • Full academic scholarships to first-rate middle schools and high schools • Mentoring, tutoring and professional counseling • Enrichment opportunities • Financial and emotional support through college

  16. Boys Hope Girls Hope maintains a network of relationships with parents, educators, clergy, social workers and other childcare professionals who recommend children to the program. FINDING POTENTIAL SCHOLARS

  17. ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS

  18. Successful candidates must demonstrate: • Financial need • Academic potential • Strong desire to succeed • Emotional stability • Good behavior in school • Strong family support for the program • A commitment to meet all program requirements

  19. SCHOLAR CANDIDATE PROFILE • Ten to fourteen years old at time of admission • Free from emotional problems and • learning disorders which might • constrain potential • Behaviorally appropriate • has capability and motivation • for achievement • Parental/guardian support and partnership

Scholar candidates must have compelling social or environmental needs which impede them from achieving academically and reaching their full potential in life. • Death of parent(s) or guardian(s) • Parental incarceration • Neighborhood violence and decay • Homelessness • Lack of educational opportunities • Chaotic or unsupportive home • environment • Lack of appropriate supervision • Terminal illness of parent(s) • or guardian(s) • Abuse or neglect • Chronic poverty • Domestic violence • Familial substance abuse

Boys Hope Girls Hope is designed for and most successful with youth capable of performing in a college preparatory high school environment. • Ideal scholars have average or above average IQ scores and have the motivation • to learn and ability to function within a structured, open and supportive • environment. • Boys Hope Girls Hope is not a residential treatment center or crisis shelter. • Boys Hope Girls Hope recognizes it is most effective with youth who do not have • a learning disability such as speech and/or language disorders, dyslexia, attention deficit and/or attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, or conceptual disorders.

  22. PARTNERSHIP IN PARENTING

  23. Boys Hope Girls Hope does not replace parents Boys Hope Girls Hope PARTNERS with parents

Legal custody stays with parents Parents/guardians retain legal custody of their child; so Boys Hope Girls Hope, in assuming physical custody, must have the full support and cooperation of the family in order to assure successful voluntary placement of their child in the program. Scholar Candidates and his/her parent/guardian must feel positive about the child’s admission to the Boys Hope Girls Hope program and support the goals and methods of the program.

  25. ADMISSIONS AND INTERVIEWS

SCHOLAR REFERRAL PROCESS • Initial Youth Assessment to gather scholar candidate’s • documentation and records of social history, family • history and school work • Psychological and educational testing for scholar • candidate to determine eligibility • Internal meeting with program staff to discuss • candidate’s eligibility based on assessment and testing • Meeting with Program Committee to present candidate’s • case and viability

UPON ACCEPTANCE TO BOYS HOPE GIRLS HOPE DETROIT • Family is informed of the scholar’s acceptance to the program • A tour of the Boys Hope Girls Hope residential homes is conducted • with the family • Orientation taken with the program director and staff for the • scholar and parents • Move in to the Boys Hope Girls Hope residential home
