  6. AOPA Speaker Guidelines • Fit in.Read any advance material on the event to understand where you fit in within the context of the entire event. • Begin with outcomes/set expectations.People will evaluate your presentation based upon the outcomes provided in advance or their own unspoken objectives. Please set and review learner outcomes for your presentation and share them with the group. Grant permission for the audience to interact with you. It sets the appropriate tone for the seminar. • Avoid overload.Segment content into key sections with a short transition, Q&A session or break in between each section to allow attendees to digest the information. • Summit attendees frequently tell us on surveys that there is not enough time to cover all the material. Focus on 3-5 key points and do not try to cover too much detail. • The most impactful seminars typically only have a few powerpoint slides with graphics to back up key points. Resist putting your presentation in powerpoint and reading the slides. • Make it real.Accompany most of your key points with analogies or real-life examples. • Use multi-mediasuch as video or other visual aids to support your points. • Build in audience interaction before and during the seminar.Q&A, text in a question, or bring in tools for pilots to try • Work with your Facilitator ahead of time– each How-To seminar will be assigned an AOPA facilitator who has been trained in seminar facilitation. The role of the facilitator: • Introduce the speaker and topic to the audience • Keep a pulse on the audience and know when to stop the speaker/moderator/panelist to clarify a particular point • Help facilitate Q&A • Ensure the impactful message of the speaker comes across and encourage interaction from the audience • Incorporate movement. The same part of the brain that controls long-term memory also controls large motor skills. Challenge the audience to move. (Excerpts from Professional Convention Management Association’s New Directions in Learning)

  7. Presentation Tools to Enhance Delivery and Learning Some resources include: YouTube Search for some of the following speeches: -Mundane information presented in a new way (David – Rapping Southwest Flight Attendant) -TED speeches (TED is a non-profit conference devoted to ideas worth sharing) • -Humorous and relatable (Ellen De Generes Tulane Commencement speech) • -Down to earth (Conan O’Brien Dartmouth Commencement speech) -Technical information made simple (Steve Jobs, Peter Norvig)

  8. On Your To-Do List • Interact on Facebook, in blogs, on twitter, etc. with pilots to get them excited about the content and start the dialog before the event so they come prepared to know more. We ask each speaker to put one post on any of the mediums mentioned by July 31. www.facebook.com/AOPApilots, #aopa12 • We will send a template to everyone and ask that you give us a few basic details about your presentation style. It will be due in mid-late September.
