  2. Timeline • Starting 2011-2012, ISS is rolling out the common core as a transition year. • We have a little time getting used to the new system, before we actually need to. • Which is good, because the common core is good teaching…

  3. Timelines for Roll-Out • 2012-2013 for all (42 states have adopted, some will say 48 states) • ISS has planned for a transition year (2011-2012) • K-2 will implement ELA and Math next year • 3-12 will implement ELA only next year because the testing plan will change at that time

  4. Timeline for Rollout

  5. 2012-2013: K-12 ELA; K-12 Math Common Core Assessment (re-norming year) 2011-2012: Transition Year:K-12 ELA; K-2 MathRegular EOG and K-12- possible field test Timeline for Assessment 2013-2014: K-12 ELA; K-12 Math Common Core Fully Operational

  6. The Common Core State Standards: Are good for kids!!!! Are aligned with college and workforce expectations; Are clear, understandable and consistent; Include rigorous content and application of knowledge through high-order skills; Build upon strengths and lessons of current state standards; Are informed by standards in other top performing countries, so that all students are prepared to succeed in our global economy and society; and Are evidence-based. Enhances teacher creativity and helps close gaps Provides richer vertical planning

  7. So many resources…. • Massive amount of content and resources available nationwide. • We want to stay consistent within ISS, therefore only using resources posted to ISS website as a common reference. • Some pieces may not be accurate, there are many draft forms, and items are still being revised. • Questions chart

  8. Math Activity • How many rectangles can you make with a perimeter of 30?

  9. Reflection • How did you solve this problem? • What process did you use?

  10. 8 Mathematical Practices • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. • Reason abstractly and quantitatively. • Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. • Model with mathematics. • Use appropriate tools strategically. • Attend to precision. • Look for and make use of structure. • Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

  11. 8 Practices For Math • Handout Common Core: Standards of Mathematical Practice Recording Sheet • Each table is assigned one of 8 practices. • How would this look in the classroom? • Share-out

  12. Table Talk • Which of these practices did you use in the perimeter activity?

  13. Quote Activity“The only constant thing in life is change” • At your tables read through the quotes and discuss as a table your understanding

  14. Cross-Walk for Math • What is new to your grade level? • What Standards have left your grade level?

  15. Common Core: English Language Arts Standards LITERATURE INFORMATIAL TEXT Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects Grades K-12 Reading and Writing standards for all content subjects

  17. Spiraling Continuum Activity • Spiral continuum of ELA Anchor • Order the standards from K-12 • Share out answers • Aha’s?

  18. Activity • Everyone find an envelope on the table • Each envelope has a reading anchor standard in it • Read your anchor standard and place in order • You may work with a partner and you may also use your common core anchor standards handout

  19. Feedback • Learning Log • Exit Card • Plus Delta
