  2. Congratulations New Parents!! • You are about to embark on a 3 day journey which in reality will last forever. • This simulation will give you just a small sample of the realities of parenthood. • Over the next few days-care and love your infant as if it was your own.

  3. Objectives: • View parenting in a more realistic way. • Consider your current stability as a parent. • Gain greater appreciation for own parents. • Creates an opportunity for parents to communicate family values, the responsibilities of supporting and caring for a child, the situations that occur when one becomes a parent before educational goals are completed and their vision of a good parent. • Relationship builder between parents and teens.

  4. Readiness Quiz • Fill in the answers on your “Readiness Quiz as we go over the answers as a class.

  5. List the four types of care you will provide for the baby. • A. Feeding • B. Burping • C. Rocking • D. Diaper Change

  6. List three other sound Baby makes. • Coo • Cough • Breathing

  7. Before you can provide care for the Baby, you must hear the chime that means Baby recognizes you.

  8. Baby will record neglect if it takes you longer than two minutes to care for baby

  9. Although real infants may be fussy for long periods of time, RealCare BabyII will not be fussy for more than three minutes.

  10. List two things that happen if Baby is roughly handled, abused, or it’s head is not supported. • Baby cries hard • The electronics records the event

  11. There are many things that you can do to prevent rough handling and head support failure. List two. • Do not juggle to many things • Do not throw baby in the air • Do not let other people hold baby • Do not leave baby unattended • Do not let anyone shake baby

  12. List three things that can permanently stain Baby’s skin. • Newsprint and magazines • Pens and markers • Clothing dye

  13. What can you do to help protect Baby from stains? • Keep Baby clothed and wrapped in a blanket

  14. How can you simulate bathing a Baby? • Baby wipes, a damp washcloth---never water!

  15. Have you read and signed the Parent/student safety precautions sign-off form that outlines all safety precautions you should take with baby? • YES!!!! • If I do not have signature today you will not take home baby and do alternate assignment!!!!

  16. Some Do’s and Don’ts • Never leave infant unattended. You may miss feedings and diaper changes. • Keep away from small children, pets and other’s who may harm your baby. • When traveling, you must buckle in the car seat. • KEEP AWAY FROM: water, newspaper, ink, food and drink items.

Care and Cleaning • Baby must be returned in the same condition it was given in. • The original clothes must be on the baby. • Do not need to wash unless it is dirty. • If baby has accidentally been marked or damaged, do not attempt to clean or remove anything. There are only a few cleaners that MAY clean it. WE WILL DO IT TOGETHER AT SCHOOL IF NECESSARY. • Trying to clean baby your self may result in further damage. • If you wish to simulate giving baby a bath you may by using a damp washcloth with water only.

Frequently Asked Questions • How long will I have the baby? • You will have the baby beginning in 1st block on Tuesday and turn your baby in Friday during class. • It will be in daycare from 9:15 AM until 3:00PM • If you are not here by 3:00 it will be considered neglect! • Can I put other clothes on the baby? • You may, but be sure it is a garment that covers the entire body for it’s protection. Must be returned in original clothes. • Can someone else watch my baby? • Yes! You will be given and extra id and bracelet to give to one other care-giver. This should be someone you would trust with your own child. Teacher will be able to tell on grade sheet how many times the caregiver provided care.

FAQ • How long will baby cry? • 2 minutes and it will be considered neglect • What if a friend or someone else damages my baby? • You are responsible no matter who cares for the baby. • Can my baby sleep in my bed with me? • It is not advised. Doing this may cause damage to baby and yourself. It can sleep in the carrier next to you. • What If my baby does not respond to my care? • Make sure your ID has been recognized by the baby. You will need to hear a “chime” before beginning any care. • What if I am sick on one of the days? • There is no way for the teacher to turn the baby off from home. You must care for the child even if you are not in school. • If there is and emergency then you will need to call or e-mail the teacher. • SEE YOUR SYLLABUS FOR PHONE NUMBERS AND E-MAIL.

  20. FAQ • What if it rains or snows? • A blanket will be provided. Make sure baby is covered during this time. • What if there is no school? • If due to the whether, you need to care the baby all day. • A baby will not be assigned on a scheduled day off • Can I take my baby places? • Absolutely! Never leave baby unattended. • Will this effect my grade? If I do poorly or very-well? • This simulation is a graded assignment. • Extra credit will be given if only your ID is used.

  21. After simulation • You will be required to complete different writing assignments to reflect on your experience. • You parent/guardian will be given a survey to fill out. • All assignments will be due one week after you have completed the simulation.
