  2. Pope Benedict XVI He was born as Joseph Alois Ratzinger on April 16, 1927 in Marktl am Inn, Bavaria, Germany. He was the son of Joseph Ratzinger, a police officer, and Maria Ratzinger. His brother, Georg Ratzinger is a priest and still alive. His sister Maria Ratzinger has managed his household until her death in 1991. He is the 265th and reigning Pope of the Roman Catholic Church and as such sovereign of the Vatican City State. He was elected on April 19, 2005 in a papal conclave, celebrated his Papal Inauguration Mass on April 24, 2005, and took possession of his cathedral, the Basilica of St. John Lateran, on May 7, 2005. School & University • Despite the financal problems, his parents let him go to the archbishoply seminar St. Michael in Taurnstein, where he was remarkable for his good marks and his ambition. • From 1946 to 1951 Benedict studied catholic theology. • Ratzinger became a professor at the University of Bonn in 1959. • In 1963, he moved to the University of Münster, where he was already well known as a theologian. • In 1966, Joseph Ratzinger was appointed to a chair in dogmatic theology at the University of Tübingen. • In 1969, he returned to Bavaria, to the University of Regensburg, a less reformist academic environment. June 1951, Joseph Ratzinger and his brother Georg Ratzinger get the Sacrament of the priest at the Freisinger Dom. • 1976 he became “Ehrenprälat” of the Pope. • In March 1977 Pope Paul VI made him the archbishop of Munich and Freising. • 28. May 1977 he became bishop • 27. June 1977 he became cardinal • Since the 25. November 1981 he is prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith with 40 employees. • In the Year 1992 Pope Johannes Paul II made him cardinal - bishop of the “suburbikarisch Diözes Velletri-Segni.” • Since 1998 cardinal Ratzinger was sub - dean of the college of cardinals • 2002 he became cardinal - dean an cardinal – bishop of Ostia

  5. His Time as Pope • Benedikt the 16th had a lot to do since he was elected from the church senate. • He went to Germany, his home, to visit lots of cities of his home country. He has been in Bavaria 4 times since he left the country to become the pope. He also flew to Poland, Spain and Italian cities to pray and talk in front of millions of believers. • In 2005 he wrote an “Enzyklika” with to parts: the first one with god’s love to the human and the love between humans with marriage, also the human’s love to god. The second part deals with charity between humans. • The 25th January 2007 he criticized the violence in computer games for children and the youth. He criticized the war toys and play weapons for children. • He also wished peace in the Libanon. • He talked about the rights of mankind and our assignment to the third world.   6. Prolific author • 1968 Introduction to Christianity (Pope is supposed to hear differing voices before making a decision. Church is too centralized and overly controlled from Rome.) • He also publicized articles in the reformist theological journal Concilium. • He founded the theological journal communion, with Hans Urs von Balthazar, Henri de Lubac, Walter Kasper and others in 1972. • It was published in seventeen languages and is a prominent journal of contemporary Catholic theological thought.
