  1. Adding and Subtracting All or Zero Unit of Study: Addition and Subtractions Concepts within 10 Global Concept Guide: 5 of 5

  2. Content Development • As teachers, we inadvertently develop misconceptions within our students about what happens to a number when we add or subtract. Consider the following quote: • “Occasionally students feel that 6+0 must be more than 6 because “adding makes numbers bigger” or that 12-0 must be 11 because “Subtracting makes numbers smaller.” Instead of making arbitrary-sounding rules about adding and subtracting zero, build opportunities for discussing zero into the problem-solving routine.” Van De Walle, p 154 • Physically model adding and subtracting 0 to a set and have students discuss what is/is not changing. • Make natural connections to the Commutative Property as a strategy to solve.

  3. Day 1 Essential Question: What happens when you add zero to a number? • Day 1 will focus on the Zero Property with addition and subtraction. • Directly model the action of adding or subtracting zero with problem solving scenarios. • Go Math Lesson 1.5 Essentials: Start with Access Prior Knowledge TE p. 29 to be able to show the difference between adding something and adding nothing, Listen and Draw on p. 29 to have students act out the process of adding 0 to a number, Share and Showon p. 30 to model using dominoes, Problem Solving on p. 32 # 18, 20-21 to understand zero means the same as none. By the end of day 1, students will be able to explain what happens when 0 is added to a number.

  4. Essential Question: What happens when you subtract all or zero from a number? • At the beginning of day 2, students reflect on what happens when nothing is added or subtracted, and have students reflect on what might happen when we take all away. • Engage students with a problem scenario such as the RtI Tier 1 activity on page 77B • Lesson 2.7: Listen and Draw use the first problem scenario during day one. • Items selected for 2.7 were chosen with the intent of using manipulatives to model the actions within the problem. • Go Math Lesson 2.7 Essentials: Listen and Draw on p. 77 use counters to model and draw subtracting zero and subtracting all, On Your Own on p. 79 #7-18 complete subtraction sentences to find the difference, Problem Solving on p. 80 #21-22 requires students to use higher order thinking skills By the end of day 2, students will be able to explain what happens when all or zero is subtracted from a number. Day 2

  5. Enrich • Provide students with larger numbers to practice the skill (ex. 97-0=97) • Go Math Lesson 2.7 Enrich Activity – 77B • Reteach • GO Math Grade 1 Reteach R15 • Go Math tier 2 P77B – Subtracting zero from a number • Intervention/Small Group • GO Math RtI Strategic Intervention – Skill 7 Enrich/Reteach/Intervention
