Peer Career Assistants • Lydia Bottoni, Literature • Ande Denholm, Sport Management • Kyle Edington, Marketing • Michalena Grosshans, Biology • Nate Hedrick, Pharmacy • Grace Lunsford, Biology • Nathan Miller, Civil Engineering All have undergone an extensive interview process and were selected to provide outreach to students. They are all trained to present topics in our Emerging Professionals Series.

The Mission of Career Services The Office of Career Services is dedicated to enabling ONU students and alumni to develop lifelong career management skills by offering comprehensive services and presentations that prepare undergraduates for internships and matriculating students and alumni for career and graduate school selection processes.

The Career Services Vision • Strategically cultivate and strengthen long-term relationships with “Employers of Choice” for the purpose of marketing our students in the local, national, and international arenas in order to maximize student employment opportunities and outcomes. • Through providing best possible resources, our graduates seeking graduate or professional schools will be able to enter into the school of their choice in consideration of demographics and economic scenarios.

Now is the Time to Begin Begin now by… • Making an appointment with a Career Advisor. • Learning about Polar Careers, powered by Symplicity • Participating in campus organizations and activities. This provides fun, leadership skills and networking opportunities. • Planning for internships to add to your resume. • Living your resume—what you do over the next 4 years will be the foundation of your resume. This includes leadership roles, your GPA and internships. The Office of Career Services is your partner as you prepare for your future.

Career Services is Your Resource • The professional staff offers expertise and experience in the areas of: • student development—an ongoing process • human resources management—important factor as you become ready to enter the workforce • human capital acquisition—important factor as you become ready to enter the workforce • Diversity—not only different races, everyone is unique and different • Leadership—the staff will train you on how to achieve different levels of leadership • Technology—ever changing and evolving • Communications—this is the life-blood of growth and necessary for every job   Career advisors have masters degrees and work experience with large and small corporations, government, and privately owned business. They also undergo continuous training.

  8. What are you going to do in 4 years? • How many of you feel confident that you know EXACTLY what career field you want to go into? • How many of you think you’ll go to graduate school? No one knows for sure what the future holds, but we have to start somewhere. As we continue through college, we’ll learn about new opportunities and new interests. Over our lifetimes, we may change career fields, some of us many times as we continue to grow and develop.

Internships • Internships are experiential learning • Gain valuable work experience regardless of your field of study • Add prestige and substance to your resume • Great networking opportunity • Meet mentors and potential references • Potential full-time employment • 77.3% of employers say the purpose of internship programs is to recruit entry-level talent. • Employers extend job offers to an average of 67.7% of their interns.

  12. AASG 300 Career and Graduate School Search Strategies One-credit hour class for Sophomores-Seniors. Course curriculum includes: • Job-search strategies • Graduate and professional school selection and admission • Leveraging technology in your career search (including Polar Careers) • Creating documents for career and graduate school searches • Myers-Briggs Type Indicator®/Strong Interest Inventory – Gaining a Better Understanding of Yourself and Others • State of the economy • Finding and applying for government jobs • Behavioral-based interviewing skills and techniques • Salary/Benefits Negotiation • Business Etiquette • Valuing Workplace Diversity

Among the presentations and events to be offered in 2009-2010 are: • Behavioral –Based Interviewing and Mock Panel Interviews • Business Etiquette Know-How • Valuing Diversity and Cultural Understanding in the Workplace • Career Fair Success Strategies • Creating Resumes and Cover Letters for the Professional • Financial Planning and Investment Workshops • Government Jobs I – Understanding What They Are and How to Find Them
