  2. Background Information • Simply known as Dante • Born in 1265 in Florence, Italy • Greatest work: Divine Comedy • White Guelph • Called “Father of the Italian Language”

The Divine Comedy • Written during Dante’s exile • Translated in Italian to “La DivinaCommedia” • Allegorical work that is divided into three parts or trecantiche: • Inferno (Hell) • Purgatorio(Purgatory) • Paradiso (Heaven) • Each canticheconsists of 33 canti. • Dante was 35 years old at the time, which is “midway in our life’s journey.”

Inferno • Nine Circles of Hell • Circle One: Limbo, where Virgil lives • Circle Two: The Carnal • Circle Three: The Gluttons • Circle Four: The Hoarders and The Wasters • Circle Five: The Wrathful and The Sullen • Circle Six: The Heretics • Circle Seven: Those Violent Against Neighbors, Themselves, or God, Nature, and Art • Circle Eight: The Fraudulent and Malicious • Circle Nine: Compound Fraud

Circle Eight • Categorized in ten bolgias • In terms of Dante’s hatred towards popes, we look at Bolgia Three: Simoniacs. • Punishment: Since these sinners committed mockery in holy office, they are punished with “a hellish baptism by fire.” • Dante denounced the popes due to the corruption they generated in the Church.

  6. Guelphs and Ghibellines • When Dante was born, Florence was Ghibelline-dominated, but eventually the Guelphs took over. • Guelphshad subordinate groups: Whites and Blacks. • There was a struggle for authority between the state and the Church. • Guelphs-Church • Ghibellines-State

  7. When Dante became determined to have a political stance, the Guelphs had lost power. Dante was a White Guelph. • Whites were happy to be separate from the Church, while the Blacks were willing to negotiate with the Church in order to reinstate their power. • Pope Boniface VIII allowed the Blacks to regain power. • This shift in power triggered his exile. • Dante placed Pope Boniface VIII in the Eighth Circle because the pope corrupted the things of God. • Dante was never to set foot in Florence again.
