  2. Meet the candidates: Lima Bean Lentil Bean
  3. The election is close, neck in neck Lentil hires a team of experts to predict her chances of winning In an effort to pull ahead, Lentil’s experts spin her a new slogan: Free gas for everyone!!! The beans are campaigning aggressively Tension in Veggie Town reaches an all time high
  4. Remember this? Lentil hires a team of experts to predict her chances of winning That’s YOU
  5. On an unrelated note: Oligosaccharide. That’s a type of sugar found in beans that humans can’t digest. The undigested sugar is fermented by bacteria in human digestive systems and a by product of the fermentation is gas äligōˈsakəˌrīd/
  6. Big Question Will Lentil’s new slogan change help her pull ahead? 3 possible outcomes: The slogan makes no difference; Lentil and Lima are still tied Lentil pulls ahead The slogan backfires (some think it offensive) and Lentil pulls ahead
  7. Time to gather data Work in groups of 4 (I’ll put you in groups) Pull out 10 beans at a time Record how many reds you get in the proper column For example, if you get 6 red beans out of 10, mark a tally here. Each group completes 20 trials Each student completes 5 trials |
  8. 10% Rule for Sampling without Replacement Note: it is not necessary to replace each bean individually after it is sampled. 500 beans in each bag: samples of up to 50 without replacement would still be appropriate.
  9. Dot Plots Imagine you just did a survey of your friends to find which kind of movie they liked best:
  10. Your dot plot would look like this:
