Used after a complete statement to introduce related details. note: Don't use a colon after are or include or such as. A colon can be used to introduce several types of information: a list, a quotation, an example, an empathetic assertion or an appositive.
Uses of Colon B. Quotation ex: In "Old Times on the Mississippi," Mark Twain describes the River Town he grew up in: "After all these years I can picture that old time to myself, just as it was then..." C. An example/Sentence ex: He paticipates in many sports: baseball and golf are his favorite. Wrong: He participates in many sports which are: baseball and golf being his favorite.
D. An Emphatic Assertion ex: This is your last chance: If you don't turn your homework, you won't pass the class. Cont. Colon WRONG- He was in charge of: registration, assignments, and delivery. Also, semicolons can be used to separate grammatical items such as phrases or items in a list when those items contain internal punctuation. In this situation, putting commas between the items on the list would be confusing to the readers. What is a Semicolon? • Semicolons—use semicolons when you need punctuation stronger than a comma but weaker than a period. They’re most often used to separate related independent clauses. Independent clauses mean that the two phrases CAN stand alone to form a sentence.
