  9. Research data sets • RCUK Common Principles of Data Policy [2011] • http://www.rcuk.ac.uk/research/Pages/DataPolicy.aspx • Publicly funded research data are a public good, produced in the public interest, which should be made openly available with as few restrictions as possible in a timely and responsible manner that does not harm intellectual property in the UK

  10. Research data sets • To enable research data to be discoverable and effectively re-used by others, sufficient metadata should be recorded and made openly available to enable other researchers to understand the research and re-use potential of the data. Published results should always include information on how to access the supporting data.

  19. Agenda • Drivers in the UK • CRIS at St Andrews • Where we are now • Challenges and next steps

  20. Challenges and next steps • Model • Impact .. Just what and how to measure? • Outcome .. Is this cfResultProduct or something wider? • Clear definitions e.g. those from Australia?

  21. Definitions

  22. Challenges and next steps • Interoperability • authority list services - organisations; journals; publishers • name disambiguation – ORCID http://orcid.org or OKKAM? www.okkam.org • Defined common semantics e.g. output types, researcher roles • A standard CERIF ‘production’ model & tools to facilitate data exchange and aggregation

  23. Challenges and next steps • Data sources • affordable bibliographic [and bibliometric?] data • funders providing CERIF data [and vice-versa] • Should we be moving data around … or should we concentrate on reusing it from authoritative source [in the cloud?] … how realistic and in what timescale?

  24. Challenges and next steps • Research Data • Where and how is CERIF useful? • Are extensions necessary? • Issues of access and security • What data should we concentrate on? • Some answers [and more questions?] from upcoming JISC funded C4D project
