  1. SOMATOTROPIN Growth hormone (GH or HGH), also known as somatotropin or somatropin, is a peptide hormone that stimulates growth, cellreproduction and regeneration in humans and other animals. It is a type of mitogen which is specific only to certain kinds of cells. Growth hormone is a 191-amino acid, single-chain polypeptide that is synthesized, stored, and secreted by somatotropic cells within the lateral wings of the anterior pituitary gland. .

  2. Where is the hormone produced? What are the target organs/structures of the hormone? • Produced in the anterior pituitary gland it’s responsible for cell reproduction, growth regeneration in animals.

  3. How is the secretion of the hormone regulated/controlled? Its regulated by the neurosecretory nuclei of hypothalamus. These cells release the peptides growth hormones - releasing hormone and growth hormone – inhibiting hormone, into the hypophyseal portal venous blood surrounding the pituitary.

  4. Function And Contribution to Homeostasis The function of this hormone is growth in humans and cell reproduction. Growth hormone helps maintain blood glucose within a normal range. Growth hormone has anti insulin activity, because it suppresses the abilities of insulin to stimulates uptake of glucose in peripheral tissues and enhance glucose synthesis in the liver

  5. Diseases, causes and effects. • Diseases as a result could be gigantism in children, acromegaly in adults and high levels of growth hormone and the causes could be a pituitary tumor.

  6. Treatment for under/over activation of hormone pathway. Surgery is the only treatment for over production of somatrotopin and injection of the hormone for under production.

  8. News, stories and summary: • In its role as an anabolic agent, HGH (Somatrotopinhas been abused by competitors in sports since the 1960s and it has been banned by the IOC and NCAA. Traditional urine analysis could not detect doping with HGH, so the ban wasn’t in use until the 2000s when blood tests that could distinguish between natural and artificial HGH were starting to be developed. Blood tests conducted by WADA at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens targeted primarily HGH. This use for the hormone is not approved by FDA.
