  1. Water Safety Conference 2010 By: Christopher Kanyesigye Christopher.Kanyesigye@nwsc.co.ug Application of the WSP Self Assessment Tool in NWSC – UGANDA

  2. The Assessment tool introduced • The tool was sent to me by Ms Sarah Tibatemwa, Director IWA Africa Office through e-mail • Initially it appeared complicated, needed expert’s introduction • Ms Sarah went through together with me, thereafter found to be user friendly • Two NWSC Branches, Kampala Water and Entebbe were selected, applied the self assessment tool in March 2010 RUDO: Easy but has to be introduced Water Safety Conference November 2-4 2010, Kuching, Malaysia

  3. Assessment methodology • Assessment was done at the NWSC Training Centre, with facilities such meeting rooms, library (for reference materials such as Annual Reports and network maps) and refreshments • Assessment exercise required experienced staff with up-to-date facts of all stages of the WS system i.e. catchment, treatment, distribution and customer premises • For each group, a chair for reading the questions as arranged in the tables and a rapporteur for recording the answers to the questions were selected • Any member who knew the answer for a particular question was given opportunity to speak and justify, where necessary Water Safety Conference November 2-4 2010, Kuching, Malaysia

  4. Big challenge! Water Safety Conference November 2-4 2010, Kuching, Malaysia

  5. Lessons learnt • By the end of the exercise, areas of good performance, gaps in the system and areas that need more focus were recorded • Duration of assessment was longer for Kampala Water (bigger branch)- 2 days than Entebbe Area -1 day • Exercise became a training opportunity i.e. members learnt and appreciated the roles and linkages to other sections • Members agreed to carry out the assessment annually to take stock of weaknesses and achievements, and link it with the annual business plan preparation and budgeting Water Safety Conference November 2-4 2010, Kuching, Malaysia

  6. Problems noted • PILOTING OF THE WSP QUALITY ASSURANCE TOOL . how ???!!!!! • The graphs of the results were not tarrying with the data input: Red bars stand for what, blue bars stand for what? • Direct submission on line was not possible, had to print, scan and mail Water Safety Conference November 2-4 2010, Kuching, Malaysia

  7. Way Forward • Address the gaps, consolidate the good performance • Apply the WSP assessment tool in the rest of the Areas • Thanks for yr attention New residential area, what WQ challenges? Water Safety Conference November 2-4 2010, Kuching, Malaysia
