I. Reverence in the Old Testament.

A. Children were to revere their parents (Leviticus 19:1-3).

1. “Revere” Heb. ar$y(( yare’ “to fear, revere, be afraid” (Gesenius).

B. Israel was to revere the Lord's sanctuary (Leviticus 19:30).

1. The church is now the sanctuary of God (Ephesians 2:19-22).

B. Elders, deacons (and deacons wives) are to be reverent (I Timothy 3:4; 3:8).

C. Older men, women and young men are to be reverent (Titus 2:2-7).

D. Acceptable service to God is reverent and with “godly fear” (Hebrews 12:28; cf. II Corinthians 7:10).
