  3. Development concerns • Breakdown of social and economic structures – high unemployment • Slow economic recovery Decline in living standards • Process of decentralization • Local self governments received many competencies from national structures • Limited financial and human capacities

MDGs in Macedonia • Macedonian Government signed Millennium Declaration in 2000 • Targets defined at the national level • Part of national program for the socio-economic development of the country • Localization of MDGs – inclusive participatory processes • To establish a link between micro- and macro-level policies • To address socio-economic problems

Localization of the MDGs • Three municipalities selected where MDGs local development strategies will be prepared • Two key processes identified: • Strengthen partnerships in 3 municipalities to incorporate MDGs into local development strategies • Establish linkages between micro and macro level policy planning • Capacity development of local actors • Establish and test mechanism to integrate local MDG targets into the National Program for Socio-economic Development

MDG project • Components • Baseline assessment • Training component – developed and delivered training program for local groups involved in facilitating the MDGs processes on the local level • Local leadership groups established – to serve as a main consultative body (CSO, businesses, local governments)

  7. Lessons learned • Effective communication networks prevent the wasting of effort and resources • Linking the capacity development projects with existing networks helped promote the MDGs objectives on a local and national level • Local trainers are a valuable asset on a local level, facilitating and supporting MDGs
