What is the Iran Hostage Crisis? • Took place on November 4,1979- January 20,1981 • 66 Americans were held hostage for 444 days • This happened after Islamist students and militants took over the American Embassy in Tehran in support of the Iranian Revolution • People tied yellow ribbons around their trees to show support for the hostages and their families

  3. What triggered this? • 8 U.S. presidents provided the Shah with military and economic aid in exchange for a continuous oil supply • There were people against that deal that the U.S. had with Shah held resent against the U.S. • Iran’s new leader in 1979 whose name was Ayatollah Ruholla Khomeini urges his people to demonstrate against the U.S.

Attempts to release the victims being held hostage • The U.S. tried different tactives • U.S tried negotiating with Iran • U.S. attempted several different rescue operations that failed • Attempted a recue operation called operation eagle daw, on April 24,1980 that resulted in a fail and in deaths of 8 American servicemen, 1 Iranian civilian, and the destruction of 2 aircraft

  5. After Effects • To this day there is still hostility between Iran and the U.S. • Iran and the U.S. have a very dysfunctional relationship • U.S. has a policy of Sanctioning Iran • Many believe that the hostage crisis caused President jimmy Carter to lose his re-election attempt

  6. Iran came to an agreement with the U.S. to set the hostages free with several conditions, one of them being paying back money they owed, and another one being that the U.S. pledged to never intervene in any of Iran's internal affairs in any sort of way.
