US involvement • Initially neutral, sold supplies to both sides • German unrestricted submarine war policy • Sunk US ships • Great migration of African Americans north to work in defense factories • Central Powers win with US help • Wilson introduced 14 points treaty • League of Nations to prevent wars • Not enough power • US did not join

Treaty of Versailles was harsh toward Germany • War guilt clause – Germany solely responsible for war • Must pay billions in reparations (damages) • Limits size of Germany • Cannot manufacture war materials • Lost all overseas colonies • Poland becomes independent • Alsace Lorraine and Saar Valley taken away

  6. After the war • Revolution in Russia • Great Depression around the world • Rise of Dictators in Europe • Eventually WWII
