  1. Does your portfolio manager have a great poker face?

  2. Having a poker face is one phrase that is very commonly used by a lot of people, but have you ever wondered, what a poker face truly signifies? A textbook reference is someone who can hold an inscrutable face that doesn’t reveal emotions or thoughts. Now, why do need your portfolio manager to be the best at poker? Poker and the stock market have a lot in common, more than what meets the eye and you would be surprised to know how many top investment bankers, like Vanessa Selbst or James Velissaris, can never say no to a good game of poker. Let us break down the meaning of poker face today and see what lies behind it:

  3. Placing bets:Just like a game of poker, stock trading and investment is all about making the right bets at the right time. But how often have you heard someone say this, “Oh he just got lucky” and why exactly is the statement oftentimes deemed offensive by a real poker player? Poker, much like the share market needs you to be observant of your opponent, in the share market your opponents are the green and red lines scaling up or moving down the world with them. While in poker you observe your opponent for their “tell”, in stocks it is all about understanding a pattern change and what those tickers tell you about the future. A lot of times people lose money because they tend to react to a single fluctuation without understanding the reason behind it.

  4. The clock resets every time the card is dealt:Like it is in poker, the share market needs its player to be okay with losing, did I say losing? Yes! Portfolio managers, like James Velissaris are fond of poker not because it is all about winning. Losing in poker teaches you something that no other game can teach you. That it is okay to lose, brush it off and play the next game. You need your investment plan to be reset like a clock and be ready for the next round with zero memory of the last game because people either tend to chicken out as their thoughts are harboured by previous loss or they double their money in rage just out of desperation to recover the lost money. You need your investment plan to be a practical one and not let your emotions decide for you.

  5. The Poker face:Poker face is not only about fooling your opponent, it is more about keeping yourself as calm as possible and think subjectively about the whole situation. Your opponent is watching your every move which is why, how calm you keep yourself is what a poker face is all about. You need to imbibe that calm in your stock investment plan. It is easy to break out a smile when you are winning or bite your nail when you are holding the losing bet but what you really need is to be calm as water and plan your next move with clarity. These are some reasons why stock experts like James Velissaris enjoy playing poker, because as Harvey Specter says in Suits, in poker “You don’t play the odds, you play the man”SOURCE CREDIT: https://jamesvelissaris.wordpress.com/2021/09/06/does-your-portfolio-manager-have-a-great-poker-face-2/
