  1. KS4 Pupil Option Survey 2016-17 (59) • 27/59 students did not read/research the online 6th form prospectus • 22/59 students did not consider KS4 assessment results when considering A Level /BTEC options. • 21/59 students admitted they did not engage in any further careers research after their guidance interview. • 50/59 students stated that parents were the most significant influence on their post 16 choices.

  2. What improvements did students suggest to the option process? • More time set aside for discussing the subject content and seeing examples of students work • Opportunity for parents and students to discuss the BTEC/AQA/OCR subjects with teachers so both understand the equivalence • A chance to hear more about pathways after A levels not involving university.

  3. Grid Analysis Sheet & First Trawl Sheet. • Research the subjects on offer and complete the grid analysis to help you determine the rank order of your initial choices. • Complete the First Trawl sheet when you are certain of your ‘rank order subject choice’ *not all students may be able to get all their subject options on the final option sheet.

  4. Post 16 Options – Entry Requirements Minimum GCSE requirement for entry to 6th form; 3B grades and 3 C grades *Students are expected to have achieved a minimum B grade in any subject they wish to study at post 16 level.

  5. St Louis 6th Form Provision All courses completed after GCSE are called level 3 courses. Students are required to study 4 subjects in Year 13. • AS and A Levels • BTEC Subsidiary Diplomas in Engineering, Construction, Sport and Music Technology • Cambridge Technical Level 3 Introductory Diploma in ICT • AQA Level 3 Certificate/Extended Certificate in Applied Business

  6. A-level Choices – Link Subjects • Link Subjects; CoPE Level 3 Certificate (KHS) – completed in Year 13. A Level Health and Social Care (SRC) BTEC Engineering (KHS) A Level Moving Images (KHS)

AS and A levels • An AS course is 40% of a full A level course and at the end of Year 13 a student can complete examinations and then ‘cash in’ one of their AS level grades. • An A2 course is completed over 2 years but only the exams taken in Year 14 contribute to the overall A2 level grade. (A 3 subject profile is required for University degree courses)

BTEC/Cambridge Technical/AQA Level 3 Certificates? • All level 3 Applied Courses offered in St Louis are accepted in UK universities (Not advised for any student considering Medicine/Dentistry/Veterinary Science) • Only ONE Applied Course is permitted in the entry profile for QUB and other Russell Group Universities • One Applied Course permitted for entry to Teacher Training in St Mary’s University College • The majority of courses at Ulster will accept more than one applied course.

The structure of Level 3 BTEC/OCR/AQA Courses • The BTEC Awards, AQA L3 Certificates and Cambridge Technical Level 3 Awards require you to build up a portfolio of coursework over a 2 year period. • Some of the Level 3 courses now have an exam module – *discuss the method of assessment with the Subject Leader.

  11. Subject Specific Requirements • Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, Pharmacy, Allied Health, Engineering and Architecture degree courses require you to study specific subjects. • Other degree areas require you achieve specified grades – Law AAA-ABB, Business Management ABB.

  12. Health Sciences and Nursing • Physiotherapy, *Radiography (GCSE and A Level Physics required) and Podiatry all require one A level science subject. • Dietetics and Optometry require 2 A level Sciences – *Chemistry essential for Dietetics and Physics required for Optometry. **Nursing courses – A level Biology is preferred at some universities in the UK. You can gain entry to a nursing degree in QUB and Ulster without Science at A level.

  13. Engineering Degree Courses • Applicants should have GCSE Maths grade A/B and A level Maths at a minimum grade B standard. • Universities will expect students to offer A level Physics for MOST engineering courses • It is desirable that one other A level subject is taken from; Technology, Engineering, Geography, Chemistry or Biology.

  14. What about requirements for Higher Apprenticeships? Accounting, Finance, Mechatronic Engineering, Industrial/Medical Sciences, Computing Infrastructure, Cyber Security…. • Paid Work (4 days in firm, 1 day in College) • Qualification equivalent to FD (Independent study and exams) • Opportunity to be retained and trained up further through the company. • Possible Sponsored part-time degree

  15. FPM Academy Route to Chartered Accountancy Targeted specifically at high achieving school leavers and offers a fast track five year employment and training contract and associated Bursary opportunities. Grades (BBB and above) Become a qualified Chartered Accountant at least one year earlier than the normal degree option – debt free! Partnership training and learning approach between FPM and the Southern Regional College.

  17. Deloitte Post A level Bright Start Programme Entry Requirements; •GCSE Maths at grade B or above and English Language at grade C or above •Predicted 3 A-Levels (or equivalent) for Audit and Tax (Grades BBB) •Predicted 3 A-Levels (or equivalent) for Corporate Finance (Grades ABB)

  18. PwC Higher Apprenticeships A competitive salary while they study towards a professional qualification. Working on client projects, learning on the job, building the in-depth business knowledge. Entry Requirements: A levels - CCC minimum The exams must have been sat in the same academic year and we do not consider re-sits.

  20. 6th Form Options Event 29th January 2018 at 1pm-3:15pm • Review the online 6th Form Prospectus at home before the Options event • Visit the subject stands with your parents and discuss with teachers the structure and content of the GCE and BTEC/AQA/OCR Cambridge Technical courses you are considering. • Talk to Careers Advisors • Complete Careers research at home using websites advised to you including university webpages. • Discuss your choices with your parents and complete your subject selection returning your options sheet.
