  3. Covenant • A binding agreement; specifically, in Jewish tradition, the binding agreement god made with Abraham

  4. Prophets • Spiritual leader who interprets gods will

  5. Diaspora • The spreading of the Jews beyond their historic homeland

  6. Vedas • A collection of prayers, hymns and other religious teachings developed in ancient India beginning around 1500 B.C.

  7. Brahman • In the belief system established in Aryan India, the single spiritual power that resides in all things

  8. Messiah • Savior sent by god

  9. Apostles • Leaders or teachers of a new faith or movement

  10. Popes • Head of Roman Catholic Church; in ancient Rome, bishop of Rome who claimed authority over all other bishops

  11. Reincarnation • In Hindu belief, the rebirth of the soul in another bodily form

  12. Karma • In Hindu belief, all the actions that affect a person’s fate in the next life

  13. Castes • In traditional society, an unchangeable social group which a person is born

  14. Four Noble Truths • As taught by the Buddha, the four basic beliefs that form the foundation of Buddhism

  15. Eightfold Path • As taught by the Buddha, the path one must follow to achieve nirvana

  16. Sects • A subgroup of a major religious group

  17. Clergy • The body of people who conduct Christian services

  18. Hijra • Muhammad's journey from Mecca to Medina in 622

  19. Quran • The holy book of Islam

  20. Mosque • Muslim house of worship

  21. Sharia • Body of Islamic law that includes interpretation of the Quran and applies Islamic principles to everyday life
