  2. Early design ideas • Horizontal axel • Traditional fan design • Multiple coils in a series • Magnet placement on bottom of turbine parallel to coils

  3. Current design • Vertical axis wind turbine design • Single large coil • Magnet mounted on spinning axle • Magnets spin perpendicular to wire • Spins on a pin to minimize friction

  5. Materials & expenses • $10.72 – rare earth magnets • $18.40 – magnetic copper wire • $ 2.50 – masking tape • $ 1.75 – wood screws • $ 4.00 – scrap wood • $ 0.40 – oatmeal can • Priceless – knowing we are finally done with Engineering Fundamentals!!!!!!! • Total = $ 37.77

  6. Current flaws • Axle wobbles • Friction along the axis • Magnet placement

  7. conclusions • Estimated efficiency: • volts * amps = watts • 2.5V * 0.04A = 0.10 watts • Fan power = 180 watts • Efficiency = (0.10 / 180)*100 = .055 % • Improvements to increase efficiency: • Larger coils • Thinner gauged wire • Closer magnet placement to the coil • Ball bearings
