  1. Chapter 11-2 Solving equations by adding or subtracting

  2. WARM-UP • Translate the following expressions into words • X+4 • k-90 • mn • 4x-y • Translate the following words into expressions 5. The sum of x and 7 6. The quotient of p and q

  3. WARM -UP • Evaluate the following expressions given that m is 6 and n is 7 7. 3m+n • n-2m

  4. Warm up answers • The sum of x and 4, 4 more than x , x plus 4 • The difference of x and 90, 90 less than x, x minus 90 • The product of m and n , m times n • The difference of the product of x and 4 and y, the product of 4 and x minus y • X+7

  5. Warm up answers • 7. 3(6)+7=25 • 8. 7-2(6)=-5

  6. Solving Equations by adding or subtracting • Objectives: • Write and solve one-step equations with one variable by using addition or subtracting

  7. Solving Equations by adding or subtracting • What is an Equation? An Equation is a mathematical statement that two expressions are equal. Solution of an equation: Is a value of the variables that makes the equation true. In other words think of an equation as a balance scale. To keep it balance we perform the same operation on both sides.

  8. Solving Equations by adding or subtracting • To solve the equation we need to isolate the variable. To isolate the variable we need to take out the constant form one side by performing the opposite operation . • Lets see some examples of equations to get a better idea of what I mean.

  9. Solving Equations by adding or subtracting • Solve Each equation by adding or subtracting • Example 1: • X+5=25 -5= -5 since 5 is adding we subtract 5 from both sides to undo the operation x = 20 Check: to check substitute 20 for x X+5=25 20+5=25 25= 25

  10. Solving Equations by adding or subtracting • Example 2: • K-2.3=6.7 +2.3 = +2.3 since 2.3 is subtracting we add 2.3 to both sides k = 9 Check : to check substitute 9 for k x-2.3=6.7 9-2.3= 6.7 6.7 =6.7

  11. Solving Equations by adding or subtracting • Example 3: = d- = + add 5/3 to undo subtraction Check: substitute 7/3 for d

  12. Writing and solving Equations Key words to help you write equations • Per, times– multiplication • Increased, sum– addition • Decreased, difference –subtraction • Is, equal – equal sign • Less than – switch and subtract • More than- switch and add

  13. Writing and solving equations • Write an equation for each statement. Then solve the equation • Example 4: A number increased by 7 is equal to 20. -7 -7 subtract 7 to undo the sum

  14. Writing and solving Equations • Example 5: Five less than a number is 34 + 5 = +5 add 5 to both sides

  15. Writing and solving equations Example 6: Julia’s hair grew 7 inches from last month and is now 24 inches. How long has Julia’s hair last month. -7 = -7 subtract 7 from both sides inches

  16. Student Practice • Lesson 1-2 practice C All

  17. Homework!! • Do the odd problems from 21-48 and 51-57 • Page 20 and 21 from book

  18. Closure • Today we saw how to write and solve one step equations with one variable by adding and subtracting • Tomorrow with are going to continue with the topic by learning how to solve equations by multiplying or dividing
